ruddlescat is right, this is the Radio 2 Preservation Society, meaning that we want shows preserved or resurrected. The place was set up when popular shows or formats and music formats were being dispensed with and replaced with more chart and current poop and celebs, since 2005.
That's why there are so many moaners on here, because the dismantling or R2 has continued.
Yes OK, it does say R2ok replaced the 'Shows & Music forum' which it did, twice, but there are sections here for current schedule discussions.
In the last year or so most of the forums I contribute to are well down on activity, some music and film subject yahoo groups have more or less folded. They've attempted to popularise themselves via facebook but it's not worked.
The only one I can think of that has flourished is the replacement Radio 3 forum (not R3ok, that's become a cliquey place which hardly discusses R3 or music!).
The replacement for the R3MB forum is a forum at the FoR3 (Friends or Radio 3) site. The site has been around for years, but the forum was set up when BBC closed R3MB, in November.
FoR3 forum has 50,000 postings, 660 members, in 7 months; I just can't keep up with it all. _________________ -

John, if this place really is about preserving old relics and not as a replacement for the Official BBC Radio 2 Message-board as the intro suggests then I and many others have been wasting our time on here. Time is precious; it’s all we have, and they’re not making any more of it before it runs out.
I guess the answer to this question really was:... yes. Oh well...good luck with that.
"Is it a forum for a small bad-tempered clique to discus the good old days of Radio 2, where we pick up and puff on our pipes, don our slippers and then reminisce about the old shows, dead DJs and music long since forgotten by the rest of the world- a place where we can harp-on about how good it used to be through our rose-tinted jam-jar-bottomed specs, and oh how we would like to be that way again, and we won’t listen until it is!" |

There are plenty of threads on current programmes on Radio 2 Rachel. Thing is it's rare to discuss the main daytime shows unless there is/was something unusual that happened on them.
JV and Drive I think are slightly different in that they have topics and guests that could lead to a discussion.
It's up to us to support them and start threads, even if they are only 'heads up' reminders.

In my previous post I was simply pointing out a fact but I would like to say that I definitely don't feel there is any reason why people should not post about all Radio 2 shows here both old and new and both current or from yesteryear
You have certainly not been wasting your time Rachel because many of your posts have provided a different perspective on things as compared to some others on here and that's exactly what's needed on a busy, interesting and vibrant forum
As I said a good forum should have a proper cross section of different age groups because that's what is representative of the society we live in
It's a bit like going in a good pub and interacting with an interesting bunch of people of all ages who are enjoying the atmosphere rather than going in one where either it's exclusively full of under 25's drinking lager out of bottles or stuffed with geriatrics supping on their half pints of stout _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

That's not what it's all about, as I said, there's sections here for the current schedule but there's rarely any running threads here for Evans, Bruce, Wright or Mayo, because... well maybe those shows are just too boring to comment about regularly, the chat or the music??
And by 'preservation' it doesn't mean old relics, it means preserving a programme schedule that caters for all the listeners that are noted in the remit - everyone over the age of 35 - and that means a wide range of music that complements the commercial output, not necessarily to compete with it.
R2 still has a wide range of music output, but more and more the chart and current pop are dominating the 7.00am-7.00pm hours, and occupying some specialist hours.
Changes in the specialist shows have also seen a reduction in the range of music. The playlists of Cullum, Teale, Ball and Titchmarsh are not as wide as their predecessors Lyttelton, Laycock, Parkinson, Morley/Keith. _________________ -

Part of the problem that the specialist shows have when compared with the shows of, say, 1971 is that there's another 40 years of recorded music in their genre to fit in. I know this isn't precise, but the technical quality of recordings improved markedly between the wars; much of the earlier stuff is simply too "fuzzy" for today's standards. The means that the quantity of recorded music you could label as, say, jazz has roughly doubled since Radio 2 started. Jazz has changed over that time, so of course the programme has changed to reflect that. Likewise for the rest. And modern music has thrown up its own specialities, too.
I have no problem with Radio 2 being a pop station for the daylight hours, but I would like to hear more 1950s material and a wider playlist so we get more variety with each track played less often.

Good point Rob, re the amont of recorded music available to R2's wide scope.
I would say, though, for example Parky's Sunday programme featured song stylists mainly of a 'swing' style, but about only half of his playlist was from the classic swing era, the other half was current artistes, some virtually unknown getting a 'break' on R2. And that's what he's now doing on his My Favourite Things prograamme on Mondays.
Similarly the current folk and blues shows are split into modern and older recordings.
And much of the vintage repertoires have been remastered for CD so R2 can avoid 'fuzzy recordings _________________ -

Doesn't look like the full schedule for that day has gone online, just the 2Day bit between 7am/pm, so I'd imagine he's still on for his usual programme.
[Update - 20:09] Looking at the Radio 2 website, it appears that Tim Smith is sitting in for Alex that week. _________________ Fred Hart

Wouldn't you think that the Radio Times could get the spelling of Johnnie Walker right? Twice on the same page it is spelt Johnny. Unbelievable!
Also the biggest write up goes to Evans & Ball and guess who is on the front cover! _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

I saw the TV advert for this the other evening. To me it seems like they're desperate to get people back to R2.
Since R&M went to 6 music and I took a DAB radio into work I haven't listened to R2 once, other than the first 15 minutes of Dermot's show on Saturday afternoon. |

I thought the same Gibbo. There was a good article by Paul Donovan in the ST yesterday saying pretty much the same.
I read somewhere yesterday that R2 staff are to be online on the R2 day. Wonder if that includes Bob Shennan?

I just depair when I see it, it seems to promoting all the presenters I can't stand to listen to Evans (at Breakfast), Ball, O'Leary, Winkelmann. They seem to be destroying the R2 I liked. Sorry if this is negative but that's the way I see it.
Thank goodness they haven't wasted too much of the evening stuff (yet) , apart from 8-10pm and the Friday Art show. |

Of course not.
Specialists show on R2 are for those who know about a certain music or topic, and could 'specialise' in the topic(s). |

After seeing the schedule, I probably won't tune in until 11am, although I thought it was going to be Johnny Walker and Brian Matthew, I now see Johnny is listed with Joe Brown.
It'll be off at 12 and back on at 1 for the rest of the day.
Helen do you have a link for the ST article???
Nothing tomorrow will persuade me to listen to R2 any more, apart from the replacement of a certain breakfast show presenter, and Joe Whiley in the evening. |

Kengeo
I'm sorry I don't have a link for the ST article as I read it in the paper itself. As far as I know you now have to have a paid subscription to read online.
It's in the Culture section, maybe if you Google Paul Donovan you may find something.

Yes unfortunately kengeo the ST is now part of the money grabbing Murdoch empire and the days of accessing output on line are long gone
I suppose that eventually like everything else with Murdoch it will just become accepted as normal
I'm disappointed Brian Matthew isn't putting in an appearance tomorrow but it should still be an interesting show which is more than can be said for much of the rest of the day's schedule in my view _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

The key show/time to tune into on Wednesday, is 1pm for the 60 minute show with Richard Allinson.
Based on the description from Radio 2 and Richard himself, this show is a "must listen to".
Looking forward to Richard's show. |

Really enjoyed listening to Jamie Cullum & Simon Mayo - daytime presenter pairing up with a specialist music presenter. The rest so far hasn't been bad, I initially wasn't looking forward to the 8am slot (I don't like Claudia Winkleman) but listened in anyway and enjoyed it. _________________ Fred Hart

Only switched on at 7.45. Didn't enjoy the jazz at all.
Vanessa and Jo only came to life when Bill Kenwright came on. Too much chatting from them they talked pretty much over the top of him. New series for him on the 50s starting in November
JV and Dermot okay, good to hear Gillian Reynolds.
So far my dislike of zoo radio still intact. I like someone talking to me not a co presenter.
We'll see what the rest of the day brings, but I'll switch off at 12 as most readers on here will know why!

Like kengeo I'm also sticking with The Golden Hour on Smooth until 10am
Overall I just don't think the Radio 2 schedule today has very much to offer and I would prefer the normal shows at the normal times as I don't listen before 10am anyway _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Chris Evans had to do the charge of the light brigade and come in the middle of Simon and Jamie show, as he wanted to be the centre of attention, because he thought it's his show.
I don't know why Jo could have gone it alone whilst Claudi is laid up resting. Vanessa Feltz irritates me and she had it easy not having to present early breakfast ( Lynn Parsons ). She also dashed off 10 minutes before the end to be on BBC London at 9am.
Jeremy and Dermot show was good too. |

The 60's 70's thing ain't working, Joe Brown looks like late replacement, and is a tad confused, I think he thinks its a 50's 60's thing he sees JW as a 60's guy, maybe Tony Blackburn would have been a better replacement?
Of course it would have worked better with Brian Matthews, never mind, get well soon Brian. |
