I have to say I have not tuned into radio 2 at all this week
I am disgusted that there have been nothing but 'stand in's' and CE
I jumped into the car twice....only to hear the disaster from the Ball woman, and the posh voice of the Feltz woman gggrrrrrrrrrr. Radio 4 to the rescue.
Why did the BBC let so many regulars go on leave at the same time?
It is not allowed in private companies even if you have children.....
I dont ever recall so many 'stand in's' being used before, is this a sign of the downward spiral? _________________ I like hedgehog crisps |

Same here, heard just a few mins of ZB before having to turn over, nothing else at all. Given that I only listen to Ken during daytime, when he's away I don't have R2 on at all in the week. _________________ MiS |

It really has been a bad week on Radio 2. I can't recall it being worse and I've listened for many years.
Slightly off topic, but a thought struck me the other day. Are they trying to drive R2 listeners to 6 Music with this dismal output and the removal of Radcliffe and Maconie? Is it all in the name of trying to get us to buy digital radios by dumbing down the FM stations either permanently or temporarily?

I take your point about driving listeners away from R2, cos after this week I cannot see who would be attracted by the current dross.
I wouldn't say that this week has been much more dumbed down than usual, after all we still have Chris Evans, and Vanessa. What we have seen is rank bad broadcasting.
I admit that I cannot stand Zoe Ball but she epitomises the problem. What grates most of all is her incompetence, and glossing it over with an 'oh aren't I silly' attitude. During Popmaster today she didn't know what the correct pronunciation of 'Aja' was; so why not do a bit of preparation and find out! It's almost like it would be unreasonable of us to expect her to make a decent fist of presentation. It is neither funny nor clever, but it is unprofessional. _________________ "There are more of us now......that makes us right" |

I forgot to mention that I've been listening to her to hear Popmaster and it's the only time outside Party Political discussions that I find myself screaming at the radio "For God's sake SHUT UP and get on with it"! _________________ "There are more of us now......that makes us right" |

I've only heard snippets of her, switched on to hear topics for the JV show a couple of times.
I'd guess at 'ayah' to pronounce Aja but it's only a guess.

I haven't listened to Radio 2 at all this week and quite frankly I can honestly say I really haven't missed it
There are plenty of other choices out there and I'm fairly selective about the shows I listen to on Radio 2 anyway but there's no doubt in my mind that Mr Shennan doesn't really give a toss about people like me which is surprising considering what a t---er he is himself _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Some I've heard have pronounced Aja as in the continent 'Asia', so I've always taken that as the correct pronunciation, unless anyone does know differently! _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

In a BBC4 television documentary about Steely Dan a few years back (which I have on DVD) both Walter Becker and Donald Fagen pronounced the album title as "Asia".
I love that album, and also "Can't Buy A Thrill" and.................. |

It makes you wonder doesn't it? Do Shennan and his masters think that some of those holding out against dreadful DAB will now have no choice but to buy one so that they can listen to Radcliffe & Maconie on 6Music? I certainly won't buy one, even if, for some obscure reason, R&M aren't available via iPlayer (or wherever BBC Radio moves to when it shifts from iPlayer). There are always alternatives ........... |

Absolutely dire !!
Firstly why would any employer let ALL it's main employees have the same week off on hols? This is very bad management or a plan to get rid of them all!!.
No I honestly don't think they are that clever that they want everyone to go to 6music DAB etc. because the bottom line is there are plenty of listeners out there who do listen to R2 and are not that discerning and couldn't care less who is broadcasting the likes of Bob Sherman know that he is appeasing the masses with the tripe they doll out these days. This forum is not representative of the average R2 listener of today by a long way. |

Not quite all of them BDG. Whilst I'm certainly no fan of Chris Evans it has to be acknowledged that he has been on this week, according to this weeks schedule, and I know Simon Mayo on Drivetime has as well. But, yes, most have been on leave and no, it wouldn't be allowed at my place of work. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Its not just Radio 2 with all its main presenters off during the week.
BBC Radio Berkshire had everyone including the Early Breakfast, Breakfast, Mid-Morning and Drivetime presenters. Between 5am and 7pm when they switch over to BBC South network output, only one programme (Bill Buckley 1pm to 4pm) was doing his own show!
Compare to my local station (BBC Radio Gloucestershire), which just had the one presenter away for the whole week, and the Breakfast presenter just took Monday off. _________________ Fred Hart

Seems BS's agenda is to drive away anyone who cares about the future of R2 and just pander to the masses who couldn't care less what drivel is served up for them, since it's largely background music to them anyway. Anything of substance is either relegated to the backwaters of the night or shifted wholesale to a digital station where it's further marginalised.
Rant over - Mr Harris is on iPlayer now so I'd better concentrate a bit more... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

How can anyone call them dire?... Aled Jones, Zoe Ball ( May have took the station off air ) and Chris Tarrant ( Played some great music ) - are all good broadcasters. Name some presenters who everyone would like to stand-in next time? |

Stuart Maconie for Ken, Dale Winton for Steve and anyone would be better than Vanessa Feltz. Nothing wrong with Aled Jones, as he's better than Vanessa in her slot.
Tarrant and Ball may be good broadcasters (NIMHO) but not for Radio 2.

I'm afraid that you're correct on all counts.
Shennan (and/or his masters) are driving daytime Radio 2 into the noxious pit of mediocrity. |

True! Seems anyone's getting half-term off nowadays. On ITV1's This Morning they even had stand-ins sitting in for the stand-ins. I tuned in and couldn't tell who were the actual presenters! |

I have to agree with pretty much all of that H.
Aled is ok but I do wish he didn't have to try and add a "funny" comment at the end of practically every sentence.
Zoe always has been and will only ever be suited to Radio 1. Her musical knowledge of anything pre 1990 is appalling.
Chris Tarrant needs to realise his days of Tiswas and OTT are long gone. He is better suited to the "commercial sector" but funnily enough I do like him on Millionaire.
Ken, Stuart and Mark Radcliffe are, IMO, three of the best that R2 have. Three knowledgable and erudite presenters who care passionately about music and appreciate any music for what it is.
But, as been said on this thread, this is not what R2 is about anymore. Some people will listen to any old crap as they are too lazy to do anything about it, unlike most people on this forum who do not represent what is now considered to be the average R2 listener. |

Eamonn Holmes and his wife Ruth Langford are regular stand in presenters on a friday and during half term.
People are entitiled to holidays, and Radio 2 should be flexiable. It's not upto the listener when the main presenters take holidays. |

Of course they are Mark, but not all together and for pretty much most of the day, 7 and half hours non stop! It wouldn't happen in business and it shouldn't happen on a radio station.
It's called bad planning and if the boss allows it to happen, it just proves he can't do the job. Something most of us don't need reminding about!

Nobody is implying that presenter holiday leave is "up to the listener". The point, as Helen correctly observes, is that it's a very bad manager who allows many of his frontline staff to take time off in this manner. There are lots of other organisations where this wouldn't be allowed.
Shennan really is useless! |

At the risk of being called a pedant, the Presenters on Radio 2 are not employees. They are freelance. They are contracted to do a certain number of shows. Or to put it another way maybe public enemy number one(aka BS) can do little about various presenters being away.
There's alot of people who come on here moaning about the dross that Radio 2 serves up during the daytime. Yet when you are spared Vine and Wright you complain about them being off.
Ken Bruce has children of school age and I for one do not begrudge him time off at half term. |

I agree with you.... Zoe did mention her child was off the week before. It was agreed that Zoe would cover for Ken when he's on his holiday, same goes with Vanessa when Jeremy is off. My guessing is Aled Jones is covering early breakfast from now on. |

They are indeed freelance contractors, as are many people who work for the BBC and other broadcasters these days. I too work on freelance contracts, and when I do I have to obtain advance agreement as to when I can and can't take time off just like a PAYE employee does.
If so many frontline staff are off in the same week, that just indicates bad planning and - therefore - bad management. |

It's the principle we are unhappy about in this case. It's not good business practice and we keep being told that the BBC is a business. At the end of the day and they have to make ends meet just as any other.
In anycase I'm not moaning about JV being away just why they have moved someone from their own slot to cover when there are plenty of others who don't already have a slot on the station.

The difference is though that Radio 2 has no trouble in recruiting stand ins.
In outside industry if too many are off at one go the work does not get done.
You are not comparing like with like. |

That's true, but it's still bad management that allows the schedule to change so dramatically in one week. |

I'm sure all the holidays which have been planned by broadcasters like Steve Wright have been approved first, and who will cover them well in advance. It got nothing to do with me or you when they take them. As long as the station continues to be on air, I can't see the problem? I think people are making a mountain out of a molehill. |

People are complaining about the number of frontline presenters being off at the same time during school holidays. No "mountain or molehill" about it; it's just bad management.
