Same as the Usenet newsgroups - you have as many (if not more) 'lurkers' than posters. Each to their own - there's no rule saying you have to contribute here but it's good when someone new does.

That's about average or perhaps above for most message boards They are most welcome whether they wish to post or not.

Anyway, some of us are making up for the ones who don't - has Scott not chalked up his 1000 yet? _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Still so few people posting messages on this board. Why?
150 members/sign ups and only a harden few posting regularly. Shame really.
Whose missing from the boards over on the other side who we would like to join.
Where's Scott? Hopefully he's not banned. |

SantaFeFan-Thanks-have just seen the news that Scott has left these boards.
What a shame-he livened the place up- I agreed with a lot of his comments.
He will be sorely missed imho but I guess not by others-eg John Wight. |

I contribute to 2 or 3 sets of boards and having only a few contributors is about par for the course.

Ha, reviving an old thread
But just to say, having another tidy up and members who registered over a year ago (2008 and 2009) and have never posted.... remove them?

I would, personally. They were probably spammers getting in manually and then collating the login details for a future "hit". |

It's standard practice on the Harley forum I frequent. Keeps it tidy, if they're serious they'll re-register. Go for it John. |

If they haven't found anything to post about with all the changes on Radio 2 in the last couple of years they're not worth having on here
There's absolutely no reason to keep them _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

OK, that has brought down members to 229.
I would say out of that we have about 80 frequent posters, and there's a hard core of 30 _________________ -

Oh Shaky, now YOU are mentioning Evans in an off-topic manner!
I would like the Evans-whingers to try and keep their whingeing to the Gripes section. But when the chicken thread was posted I think it got appropriate responses, don't you think Shaky? _________________ -

The question was asked why people would register and not post - I was making a suggestion.

Given that it's more likely to be advance actions of spammers (as I know from bitter experience of running phpBB2 installations since 2002), your reference to people being put off by the "anti-Evans comments" is the least credible reason. So, in this instance at least, it's you who has dragged up this topic again only to then throw toys out of the proverbial pram! |

Oh, one member (who hasn't posted) who I have kept on the list is Peta at the BBC, and her membership remains 'active', so can be PM'd or e-mailed
I can't remember WHY Peta joined, maybe it was around the time that Evans was brought to the breakfast programme, and she later revealed that whenever Evans did an 'outside broadcast' she was inviolved in the production. _________________ -

On the Home page today it is showing 241 registered users. I have noticed recently that there have been a lot of very strange sounding names shown as the newest member(s) too. It seems a bit odd to me! _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

Yeah, I get about 10 bogus registrations per day, they are not 'active' (i.e. not accepted by admin) but still have to be removed manually. when I go on-line.
Bizhat have been getting complaints on their support forum for over 3 years, but have offered no solution to spam registrations. _________________ -

They can't be bothered, John. The solution is ridiculously simple but they obviously have no interest whatever in applying it. Once, about four years ago with a forum I was managing and which was hosted on 1&1 Internet, I got 22,000 spambot registrations in one day (yes, you read that correctly!) which was classed as an effective DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack on the server. I did some research and found out how to make a simple php code tweak at the registration stage and within two days I reduced the number of spam registrations to zero.
This is the problem with freely available forum hosting provision - you can't get at the source code and they don't care!
You could actually move the whole lot to a self-hosted solution at very low cost, but you run the risk of losing traffic because it's difficult to re-direct URL requests from this Bizhat sub-domain effectively. And that's where they have control over you. |

All reasonable points Colin but to port the board if you can buy the data base from them as you know you need a pretty high degree of technical skills to actually then facilitate the transfer, to the average person that is!! That is what made us dependent on a Techie to do it with Jezza's when we went for self hosting. We only did it because the company at the time had a buy out and was clearly about to go under and we had a lot of downtime , on investigation it had been sold to some guy in the states somewhere who didn't have a clue what he was doing!! Except he introduced compulsary advertising!
It isn't the cost so much as havng the technical expertise to do the transfer if you don't want to loose the data. I still have a very small board for friends only and it is a free board but run on php.bb3. Clearly the company (although we do have the advertising) has the security issues for spammers under control because we never ever get spam registrations. BUT it does go back to who is going to facilitate the transfer and uploading of the data unless you are offering to do all this for John?
It was technical issues that held us to ransom on Jezzas, once we made that leap and not having the skills to deal with it and that led to the events that subsequently happened and a hell of a lot of stress and upset for me personally in dealing with it all. Not that I'm trying to excuse it but the person in question was as you know very very demanding in that respect!!
At the end of the day they try and register but I've never actually seen the spam appear on the board, so clearly John has that under control. It is also the only board that has survived consistently since the original demise of the R2 boards....so hats off to John in that respect
Also redirecting I don't think is the problem because you can leave the freeboard and just put the info on there that you have moved, that was never the problem when we ported the board, we didn't loose posters because of the URL. In addition if you google R2ok it takes you straight to the R2ok domain which then links to the forum, so it would be easy for John to pick up the issue of finding the board. The bizhat ratings seem to be low in that respect. It is the issue of the technical transfer and administering of it from self hosting point of view that I would think would be more of a concern? |

I'm quite happy to keep this forum going in its present format. It costs nothing - I paid just a small fee early days to remove all advertising, as far a I know we never see advertising on this forum, yes?
The rogue registrations are just a slight annoyance, I just have to purge them every day or so. They have reduced considerably. _________________ -

Although I would like to add that having had a look at the Support Forum it does seem well slightly worrying that Admin hasn't been seen this year!
Clearly as you say Colin they are not bothered about spam and when you see a sticky topic on it that dates back to 2007 it does raise some issues.
But the issue still remains if you host yourself who is going to faciliate it in terms of transfer and day to day running of it?
Sorry John I didn't see your post before I posted the above. The main risk being that a free forum provider could disappear overnight but it is a hard call, and sorry also that I forgot to add that you had probably paid a fee to remove the advertising, whether that removes other issues I don't know like spyware because I'm not expert in that respect but no doubt Colin would know! |
