I found an interesting story on the Internet today, from the Guardian website.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/sep/04/ken-bruce-radio-2-presenters
There's an interesting point that he made - the success of the most popular programmes is ignored:
Quote: | Bruce was also critical of Radio 2 for failing to "trumpet" the success of the station's most popular DJs and for promotional campaigns which he said consistently showed the station's most high-profile recruits at the expense of others. |
According to the article, 70% of Radio 2's audience share is provided by Sarah Kennedy, Terry Wogan and Ken Bruce. On a Saturday, the most popular programme is Sounds of the '60s.
I think Radio 2 should take note of this; less of the celebrities, more of programmes such as Sound of the '60s. _________________ Fred Hart

Yes I totally agree with him, it's about time someone else spoke out about it.
I wonder if he'll say anything when he is on Michael Ball's show tomorrow?

As well as good publicity for his autobiography, I suspect that he is putting down a marker should any re-organisation of the morning schedule become necessary. _________________ Ron |

Ah! So this must be what Simon Mayo was referring to when he Twittered "Smart man that Ken Bruce" earlier! |

I agree with Ken but you could also turn it back on him by asking why he doesn't trumpet a lot of the music that the listeners would like to hear. |

It's amazing how some of his comments are actually what the general listeners are thinking. Good on him speaking out. He does have to remember also that he does do TV work and Countdown which is a popular show. Also mentioning Wogan and Kennedy there careers have been mainly on TV before turning to Radio 2. He didn't mention names neither did the article name Zoe Ball who also been on TV was parachuted in to cover his shows when current Radio 2 presenters have been pushed out. Same goes with Mark Radcliffe he's puhsed out of afternoons for Steve for a TV star. Also we have to remember Simon Mayo has got a job on 5 Live and all of a sudden been parachuted in to cover shows when there are already enough Radio 2 broadcasters to cover. It does seem a little strange we do see exciting R2 broadcasters pushed out of shows they once covered? |

I'm sure he does remember, Mark. He seems that way inclined. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Sadly, Ken doesn't seem to be on the Countdown list anymore. He'd be a vast improvement on some of the numpties they've had on lately _________________ MiS |

I do think Ken is right about this. There are a lot of broadcasters who have more radio experience than these celebrities, but some commercial radio stations wouldn't want them to leave and work for the BBC. |

He's just been "interviewed" on Michael Ball's show - nothing more revealed than was in the two Mail on Sunday extracts, but confirmation at the end that he's staying put for the forseeable future. _________________ Ron |

Ken is a decent person on and off the radio. His interview with Michael Ball was interesting about his life and children. I hope he stays between 9.30 - Noon and not pushed out for a TV celeb. I'm sure this won't happen yet, but it's ever increasingly happening in the schedules. |

I didn't hear all of it but I don't think he touched on the subject of Radio 2's celeb excess did he?
I noticed he puffed up Mr Ball's ego at the end though... I wonder if that was genuine as MB seems very tame to me. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Had a rare opportunity to hear most of Michael Ball today. He's not bad, sounds more at home than he did to begin with, and, apart from the ludicrous selection of the Real Thing's "You To Me Are Everything" just after discussing The Boat That Rocked, the music list wasn't bad either.
Ironic, amidst all the talk of celebs being dropped into Radio 2 shows, was the trail for Desmond Carrington's show and his feature on Matt Monro, following Chris Evans on Friday. Film and TV actor, a soap actor, no less - is he the exception to the rule? _________________ Ron |

I don't think this was a good career move by Bruce.
His bosse's might be asking him a few questions over the next few days. |

He probably knows something that we don't - perhaps he knows the outcome of an up-coming shuffle at R2? _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Radio 2 would be fools to get rid of Bruce. Not only excellent in the morning, but when you have numpties like Anton Du Beke presenting Friday Night Is Music Night (as he did on Friday) you realise just how brilliant Ken is.
Of course, given today's news, the Radio 2 bosses don't really understand their listeners. Never mind, I'm sure Ken will take a sizable portion of his 6m listeners to whichever station snaps him up. |

I agree, especially when you consider the pretentiousness of changing your name from "Tony Beak" to "Anton de Beke"!!!!

I'd like to see the big players emulating what has happened over on Planet Rock - by clubbing together and buying their own licence from OfCom. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |
