What on earth are the producers of radio 2 overnight thinking? whenever i tune in there in the wee hours it is manic techno or other very lively jump around music & manic chatter. Are they all on E's? Most folk like something a bit more soothing at night. Magic have a better idea.
And what are those two northern guys mid evening on? This evening they played some plodding techno-ish thing from the 80s with no tune, totally repetative, & some moron shouting "Hitler" throughout it.
The dj then said "What a brilliant record"

As R2 now provides relatively little for those of us in our golden years, as Alan Keith used to put it, why not put some repeats of SOTS, Desmond Carrington etc on at night?

I've started to record Radcliffe & Maconi lately to hear the next day as I think it's a great show..
Listening to last night's show so far, Maconi only by the way, I reckon the track in question is "Hit the North" by the Fall?
It does sound like Hitler....
I like this kind of track but then again, I also liked Psycle Sluts by John Cooper Clarke.. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Yes, it was the Fall.
I thought it was awful!
I sometimes do like that show, the Chain is a good idea. But i turned over to magic after that record last night!
I really like radio 2 on Saturdays and sundays. Sounds of the seventees is great & I quite enjoy Paul o grady & his eccentric music mix |

I do like the show when I have tuned in. The music and chat seems to be good. I do like Mark when he covers for Wrighty. I also like Stuart when he covered on drivetime. |

I'm not a fan of The Fall, but as they've been around for 30 years I guess their average fans are actually of the same age as the average Radio 2 listener (which I think is 52). |

It's a great show imo.. I like both Mark and Stuart's humour, really makes me smile sometimes, particularly when Noddy's with them, and in general, all the music they play is interesting.
I can just about keep up with the newer band names they discuss too. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Radcliffe and Maconie have overtaken all other Radio 2 shows as my favourite by miles - or even by worlds. Marvellous radio. Maconie's nearly-namesake would be proud. |

I asked producer Roy Oakshott about that some time ago on the dancebands yahoo group. The problem is contracts and repeat fees for producers and presenters, and more royalties for obscure music/tracks probably comes in to it too.

I recorded Suzi Q's show last night and listened to it instead of Ken Bruce this morning... another great show in my opinion - all 50's songs.. and some really nice ones too.
I like her presentation style... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Why are you recording a show?-surely much easier to use the iplayer feature. |

well, I haven't used the iplayer yet so don't really know how it works but with my DAB radio and built in card slot, it's easy to record and; with a timer.
So last night I recorded R&M and Suzi to hear several times over... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I magine it's much easier your way SantaFe! You could then carry the radio around with you if you wanted to. I still occasionally record shows on my mini disc recorder if I want to listen in the kitchen.

PS I saw the radio you mentioned the other day. Do the bass and treble work well? It's something that is rarely found on radios these days. _________________ 88 - 91 FM this is Radio 2 from the BBC!

exactly Helen, it's portable and I can transfer the card to another radio or DVD player if needed.
Unfortunately, I can't say the bass sound is very good on the Roberts.. it easily distorts if the bass control is over half way but for general listening it'll do.. I can't understand why today's radios don't get that deep sound like the old ones used to.
If I'm in for a long session on my drawing board, like today, I plug the radio into one of these PC sound systems - a powered woofer and two speakers I bought from Staples... £20! it sounds very good too.
I've got a Sony mini disc/CD/radio system in a very nice shiny black finish but alas, the mini disc started to play up so in typical male fashion, I gave it few taps followed by a big hit and it doesn't work at all now... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

without labouring the point, this is why I like my new radio, because I'd normally miss these shows no matter how much I like them..
Tonight for example, I'm recording Mark Lamarr's show... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Whilst staying up listening to the Richard Allinson weekend shows I have noticed that the news readers employed during the night hours are how shall I say it......rubbish.
Where does the BBC find these folk from some of them can't string 2 sentences together without tripping up.
Richard is certainly having to work with second rate colleagues. |

I agree with you! I've not heard the shows for a few weeks, but the female on the ones I did hear was absolutely awful. I'm sure any of us could have done better than she did.

Thanks Helen.
Hope you can catch Richard again when you have some time-he is now really settled into these weekend shows and the music he is playing is just fabulous.
The shows do remind me of when he was presenting on Saturday afternoons a few years ago.
He just needs to bring back the Wall of Sound feature imho. |

Thank you for that SF. In the course of looking for Rachel's egg timer I hung my nose over the Roberts which records onto an SD card but was unable to hear it in action, because it couldn't receive any signal. Since there are 26 floors of flats above the store I can understand that there may be reception difficulties but I find it incredible that, since they manage to hook up the serried ranks of televisions to a proper aerial they can't do the same for a radio costing £145. _________________ Ron |

That'll be because in-store signal distribution arrangements exist for multiple TV displays but not for DAB units, probably. Additionally, TVs of all descriptions (whether standard def or HD) have a variety of input options which can accept the in-store distributed signal whereas portable DAB units probably don't.
DAB signal distribution over-air is also pretty flakey (much like DVB-T Freeview is) so that's an added obstacle. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Since we first commented about the quality of newsreaders on duty during the small hours I note some of the big hitters/rgeulars have been brought back eg Colin Berry, Alan Dedicote etc.
Hopefully this remains to be the case going forward etc. |
