Some libraries in Gloucestershire have introduced what it calls "quiet background music" (including, apparently, the Sugababes ) in order to improve the atmosphere and attract younger users. However, this may be at the expense of older users - one 76-year-old said that she couldn't concentrate on which books to select because of what she described as a thumping background beat. And of course plenty of much younger people might well be bothered by it too, especially those who choose to use the library as a place of study.

What would your reaction be if you walked into your local library and there was music playing in the background? _________________ Ron |

I preferred it when our libraries had a silence rule, as opposed to the present situation, where loud conversations seem to be the order of the day. But apparently that kind of stance is considered elitist today.

This is how times have changed. When Weatherspoon pubs first opened they were supposed to be quiet places. Now look at them they have TV screens and gaming machines. |
