I am quite enjoying the afternoon show this week. Mark Radcliffe's humour seems a lot more subtle when he's not competing with Maconie for air-time. I even quite like Emma Forbes, who seems a bit more laid back than Liza Tarbuck and not quite so "in yer face" as Sally Lindsay.
It's made me realise that I used to like MR quite a lot when he first started, but that for me the magic has worn off the Radcliffe/Maconie union. That show has got altogether too shouty, with each vying for the microphone. Much more enjoyable when one of them is off, like this week. _________________ Minx

I feel that Radcliffe dominates Maconie - Stuart always seems to be struggling to get mic time except in the "set pieces" which have a formal structure. It could be because Radcliffe operates the desk; anyone who's done programmes on any station will tell you that it's difficult to get a balance when one of you works the kit so knows when things are going to happen.

I also think that of the Radcliffe / Maconie on-air relationship. However, I don't their either of them flies the desk because I think the prog comes from a music studio in Manchester and they're seated at a normal "desk" to one side of the larger studio. When bands are on the show (which is nerly always) they all occupy the same space - so the only mixing desk is the one in the control room.
I think.... |

I do like this week (and, let's face it, almost anything's better than Wrighty) but think Emma talks over Mark too often, spoiling his jokes. She's useful, though, to talk to those people he doesn't like and is nicer than Tarbuck.
I still think Sue Perkins was the best sidekick though.

I'm pretty sure it's been mentioned that Radcliffe drives the desk - even, on some occasions, admitting to not bringing up Stuart's microphone! Maybe it's different when bands are in. |

Mark and Emma are good together in the afternoons. I think Emma is slightly better than Liza Tarbuck as she's better with her own show, although the Saturday cover show for Wossy wasn't wonderful.
Mark and Emma really bond together and the interviews are good. It's a certain change from the happy clappy Wrighty show, but I'm always pleased for his return. Must be because he's been in the slot for years.

I'm not. Wright's weak attempt to be "cool" and laddish just doesn't wash, and I'm fed up with the sickly sycophancy that surrounds him. It drives me nuts and I tend to avoid it all.

His first studio manager was called Marconi, if I'm correct. |

Is there any show on Radio 2 you actually like, all I've read from you is criticism and how you hate X, Y and Z? _________________ Chris Evans' Breakfast - doesn't sound quite as good as Chris Evans' Drivetime but good nonetheless! |

It's been nice to be able to listen to R2 between 2:00-5:00pm, just a shame the other numpty that takes over at 5:00 isn't away, then I could have enjoyed completely shout-free afternoons this week! _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I'll be avoiding it regardless of the guests (who are only plugging for dear life their most recent album anyhow).
However, the Radcliffe and Forbes team has worked well this week. Much better that the regular occupant of the slot by a long mile. |

Ok in response to the person who was complaining that everyone else seemed to be complaining - I've really enjoyed the Radcliffe/Forbes show this week, I thought the music on Wake Up With Wogan has, this week, been particularly good and I've also enjoyed the Stuart Maconie Show, despite the fact, obviousky, that I like Mark Radcliffe too, I thought that Stuart was even better by himself. He was robbed of Drivetime in my opinion. |

I agree. Johnnie Walker thinks so, too. The then R2 controller decided to take the "dumbed down" route, however, so Maconie wasn't therefore going to be in the running. |

I think he was too. Going back several years to when John Dunn was the regular Drivetime host, Johnnie Walker became the regular stand-in presenter in John's absence (I don't remember who the stand-in was before JW was signed up) and when John Dunn gave up Drivetime, the show became Johnnie Walker's. Of course in the JW era, Stuart Maconie became the main stand-in in Johnnie's absence and everyone was expecting Stuart to become the regular presenter, and, to my mind should have done. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

That's because he's a pretentious (expletive deleted). The band is years beyond its prime and they're up their own derrieres. I mean, does he who likes to be called "Bono" really have to wear those stupid-looking sunglasses even when it's cloudy? |

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that; even the media seem to be sick of his constant preaching.
Suggestion; buy him for what he's worth and sell him for what he thinks he's worth, and you'd have enough money to solve all the problems he's forever ranting about.
If Bozo ain't up for it do the same for Steve Wright, you'd raise as much money! |

It's great to see Richard Allinson popping up on Radio 2.
It may be only one day on this occasion but I'm sure it will be a great afternoon's entertainment.
Allinson rocks. |

I do re-tune the radio when SW is on - happily I can leave it tuned into R2 today since Richard is filling in. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Dammit, I've just realised. I switched off just before 2.00pm as well in the expectation of having to listen to the normal rubbish. I do like it when RA does the afternoon slot. |

I'm happy to see this board full of praise and criticism. Anecdotally, it provides an interesting representation of the nations' views - namely that the majority appear to be concerned about Sarah, Chris and Steve and that Mr Bob Harris and Gambo command nothing but respect.
Of course Radio 2 is a broad church (where different works) where one man's listening opium is another woman's monsterous heroin but I'm glad there's frequent tirades of opinion on these boards. I like reading it. |

Well, certainly in the case of the latter two they're consumate broadcasters of the highest order whose musical knowledge is (in their respective fields) unrivalled, and I'd be sad to see either of them disappear from our airwaves. |

So did I but I was in the garden. I came in about 3.30 and realised what I'd been missing.

I really preferred it when Mark Radcliffe did the SW show on his own Emma Forbes was ok Liza Tarbuck got a bit 'overwhelming' Sally Phillips was the stand out co presenter but my personal favourite was his first stint that had that daft contest he did the awful impersonations on. |

So did I Dave! I can't understand why we need to have 2 presenters on so many programmes. I want someone to talk to me not among themselves.

I quite like the chat between Radcliffe and Tarbuck and/or Forbes. It works well in the slot. That said, what I don't like is the grovelling sycophancy witnessed among the occupants of the studio when Wright is hosting. |

You won't be enjoying the Dermot O'Leary show then Helen, where he spends much of the time consulting the production team for the music facts that should be his stock in trade. Then of course there is all the chat with the "unmiked" members of the session groups.... hardly rivetting listening. _________________ Minx

I do agree, Dave - however, I've heard Mark talking before about how he hates doing shows on his own (thus why when Stuart is away, he seems to call the guests into the studio as early as possible). Thing is, he's at his best when talking to himself. Did anyone hear him do an absolutely hilarious two minute waffle lead up to the news about two weeks ago? He was talking about how his waffle was pointless and merely there as filler but nevertheless required and so he continued. Funniest man on Radio 2. |
