Yes it is a good evening all evening, starting at 7pm. I have just struggled in from work and will be toasting my toes round the fire from 8pm! Will have to go to bed listening to the Pirate as I'm working all day tomorrow too............. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

It's not too late SanteFe!
Great to hear Dancing in the Street, I watched the Motown shows on BBC4 last night and they were fab as we used to say! Paul McCartney was on talking about their covers of tracks on early LPs and their love of Motown.
Great year he's highlighting tonight as well, 66 was a great year for music IMHO.

I watched both those programmes Helen and yes they were fantastic, I really enjoyed the second one about the Funk Brothers.. simply amazing.
I loved watching the drummers, made it seem so easy!
I hope they'll show them again so I can record them. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Funny how the opening chord to "I feel Free" still makes me go weak at the knees after 40 years!

That's the thing about all these old songs you instinctively know the title from just a single note sometimes!
Great memories of the World Cup, and Out Of Time.

Jailhouse Rock reminds me so much of our old Ferguson Radiogram loaded with 78s.. I can still smell the warm valves and the thundering bass!
I have one just like it now and it works fine!! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

There was one from Denton Burn in Newcastle as well, that's a stone's throw from where I grew up!
Sloopy was a fave of mine back then as well.
Old American radio is superb!

I had a great set of LPs years ago called Cruisin'.. each one featured a year from the 50s and 60s and featured American radio DJs and music from that year including real period adverts.. just like listening to the radio!
I wonder what happened to them?? _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Just 'listened again' to this, what an interesting show it was. For some reason you have to go to the I-player page to get to the Saturday evening shows: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/ clicking on the 'listen again' link on the R2 show page doesn't seem to work for some reason. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Wonderful. Not to be the deliverer of sad news but did you know they're about to knock half of the general down to make room for a Tesco? Mind you, if my birthplace became a supermarket, I think it would be quite a nice thought - well only if the spot becomes the cake or wine aisle. I don't fancy the thought of entering the world next to the tinned tuna.
Anyway...

Its hard to imagine how you could follow this weeks show, every track was superb. I hear that next week's guest will be Roger 'Twiggy' Day, now that will really take me back. I used to write to him! _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

I agree Angela W, it really is enjoyable listening.
For me, only a visit from Rosko could improve things! I was completely blown away after hearing Rosko/Walker and Skues on Pirate radio Essex!
Maybe one thing would enhance the show and that would be a brief News Summary from the era..
The Beeb did a long series in the 80s every Sunday featuring "The Rock and Roll Years" a year at a time with news items accompanied by a "teleprinter" clanking away in the background..
I have tapes of it all somewhere.. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I'm recording the show twice
Once onto my DVD player so I can have all the shows on 2 discs and also on my portable DAB radio with a SD card slot so I can listen to this and Suzy Q's show tomorrow when I'm working
Now or Never gives me goosebumps.. it always reminds me of the local Amusement Park with all the "grown-up" Teds and Rockers mulling around the fairground rides.
I always liked the sound of the wooden claves in this song.. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Hi RB and Becky,
I posted something just after Minx' post but it's vanished!
I loved the Supremes' Come See About Me.
I'm recording them from Listen Again and I've copied the playlists as well.

well, I guess I'm old then.. I remember Singing the Blues by Guy Mitchell.. on a 78 I think.
I thought it was a great song and better than Tommy Steel's version _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07
