|
A few years ago Radio 2 in their infinite wisdom (HA HA) stopped playing all the classic Christmas tunes from the 40's onwards but carried on playing the 70's Christmas singalongs.
I have noticed this year that among the turgid playlist they are only playing Christmas tunes by Gabriella Cilmi, The Feeling etc.
Please don't tell me this is the only ones they are going to play from now on and if so how much more pathetic can this once great radio station get. |

It's only new songs on the playlist and it's still a bit early for the usual Christmas songs, apart from Drummer Boy.

Ah, did he start the show with it?
Somehow I've noticed he always seems to kick off Christmas with this song - though I did hear him play the Santa's a Scotsman tune last week. |

Mariah Carey has entered the Top 40 with that one. Also Pogus and Kirsty M also with there Christmas tune. The Feeling - Feels like Christmas, George Micheal - December Song are also on the Radio 2 playlist. Even Steve Wright is playing some Christmas jingles. I don't think it's early for Christmas songs now. The BBC are funny over playing them too early. Who cares commercial radio are playing them. |

Christmas ain't Christmas for me without hearing "Christmas Wrapping" by the Waitresses...
I can also hear Slade and Wizard every hour - no problem... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Agreed! "Christmas Wrapping" is a brilliant record - great lyrics, fantastic drums, chistmassy guitar - the best! |

I like The Waitresses song too, aswell as The Pogues, Slade and Wizard.
What about, Walking In The Air, Let It Snow, White Christmas, I Believe In Father Christmas etc etc etc.
How many times have you heard any of these this Christmas on Radio 2?
They just seem to have so many rules of what can't be played that it's becoming an unfunny joke |

Nice one Nick! I've liked it since I first heard it.. what was it - early eighties?? as you said, lots of interesting components to the song.
Another strange female band I liked the sound of was the "Eureka Springs Garbage Ladies" as brought to my attention by my hero Frank Zappa.. in fact I'm off to see if I can find the tape I have. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I like Stop the cavalry.
I can't stand Slade, Wizard, Elton John or Macca and co to name but a few, not that keen on Christmas tunes as a rule anyway. |

Did you like them at the time Toggy? or are you just sick of hearing them.
They bring back great Christmas/pub memories for me... particularly Slade. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I'll look them up...
Have you ever heard the slaughtering of Christmas Wrapping by the Spice Girls who tried to 'modernise' the lyrics in the 90's. Wogan played it last year - pretty dire. |

Now driving home for Christmas I do like, it tends to be not overplayed like the others I mentioned.
Things like Merry Christmas everyone I cannot stand, I get sick of hearing them year after year, I actually have to mute the sound when they come on. |

Now having found the 29 year old cassette tape of Zappa's "Starchoice" on Radio 1, I find the track was "Eureka Springs Garbage Ladies" by the GTO's.. bit strange but I still like it.. the previous choice by Frank was "My Lucky Number's One" by Lena Lovich.. I liked that too! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Can't say I'm that keen on it.
I prefer the more traditional sort of Christmas music, carols and stuff. I'm not religious, I just like the sound of them (if they are sung properly!) |

I don't go to Church but I have fond memories of my school days when we all trooped off to the local church for Carol Service.
Thinking back it was really quite magical.
My favourites then and now are,
Once in Royal David’s City, Silent Night and Hark the Herald Angels Sing... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I hope so Helen, but I'm beginning to have my doubts as they don't fit in with the ultra bland new Radio 2
PS, I do wish some of you posters were in charge of the music on Radio 2
Most of you seem to have a great breadth of musical knowledge , actually saying that you wouldn't get a look in lol |

Of this year's releases I quite like "Wa-haw-hawm this Christmas" (or is it "winter") by Gabriella Cilmi. It reminds me of some other record, way back, but I can't just put my finger on which one.
My favourite carol was "O Little Town of Bethlehem" |

I like that one as well Minx!
It's an almost identical cover to Connie Francis' 1962 recording. I'd never heard it before though!

I recall a song by Jethro Tull (I no longer have the album) full of Christmas cheer and a general message that the Christmas spirit is not what you drink....
....then right at the end you here a voice whisper 'Hey, Santa, pass us that bottle!" |

The Christmas music usually starts big-time on the Monday of the last full working week before Christmas, and dries up quicker than you can say “so this is Christmas” on the 28th Dec.
Just out of interest – cos I’m sure not many of you ever click on it but every weekday I change my signature track link , and this month, it’s been a different Christmas no1 every day , today for example, it’s; It's Only Make Believe by Conway Twitty – Christmas no 1 1958 …. (being from the future- I wasn’t around then) |

Rachel mentioned Conway Twitty, and I am a fan of his music, from his nineteen fifties rock'n'roll beginnings and then into Country Music in the late sixties. I met him once in London at the Wembley Festival I'm glad to say! Conway holds the record of having had forty one Number One Country singles! Wally Whyton of Country Club on Radio 2 once said he preferred Conway to Elvis! |

Ron,
I heard Gabriella on with Simon Mayo a couple of weeks ago and they were discussing it!
I found Connie Francis on You Tube the next day but now can only find Connie Landers, and it's a different recording.
Some of the words are slightly changed on Gabriella's version.

Hello H
Senior moment I'd searched youtube, that came up and I didn't really look beyond the first name!!!
The Hit Label project sounds as though it was a bit like Woolworth's Embassy label - low budget soudalikes of chart records - and Connie Sue Landers, who was a session singer in Nashville, was one of their signings.
I'm sure that someone will post Connie Francis' version on there before long - it can be found on The Singles Collection, under a fiver at Amazon. _________________ Ron |

So sort of topic.... apparently the Holiday Inn has banned Slade's 'Merry Christmas Everybody' from its Christmas sound system because guests find it irritating...
They're just jumped up travelodges anyway....

Steve has started to introduce the Christmas jingles and the bells under the traffic jingle. Anyway Christmas music is starting to be played as you can't get away with Aled and Terry, George M and The feelings offering. |

I really like the 50s and 60s music even though it was way before my time ( well I turned up in the mid 60s but you don't really have any musical understanding until about age 6 or 7: well I didn't- I guess-the first Christmas songs I can remember from when I was little is the Slade era but today 1963 popped into my head, and in response to that thought I leapt forward to Christmas no 1 2005 .... |
