http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1084191/New-shock-Radio-2-fans-After-Russell-Brand-furore-Ken-Bruce-faces-chop.html
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quote: | Popular Radio 2 presenter Ken Bruce faces the axe after 26 years at the BBC as part of a major reshuffle at the beleaguered station.
Sources at the Corporation said that Radio 5 Live's Simon Mayo, 50, will replace him on his weekday 9.30am-to-noon show.
An industry insider said: 'It's not great timing for this to come out for the BBC.
'It has been completely humiliated by Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand, who have appalled their listeners.
'Then it goes and gets rid of genuine talent. Ken is a revered DJ who has given his life to the BBC and really brings a great deal of magic to Radio 2.'
Four-times-married Scot Bruce, 57, is one of Radio 2's longest-serving presenters. He has an unblemished history and millions of loyal fans who will be surprised that he is being squeezed out - as will he.
The BBC insider added: 'The replacement of Ken Bruce with Simon Mayo is all being kept very quiet at the moment because it won't happen for a couple of years.
'The idea is that the change will happen in 2011, when 5 Live moves to Manchester. But they have to start planning for it now. |

I've nothing against Simon Mayo, but I would be very unimpressed at losing Ken Bruce. Why should he go when he's such a popular presenter. I'd much rather Simon replaced Evans if he is to come to R2 on a permanent basis. In any case, if this was another Douglas disaster decision. It can surely be scrapped now she has gone! _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

BBC management being inspired as ever, the schedule will be Evans on breakfast, Mayo mid morning & Steve Wright in the afternoon. They might as well get that Gary Davis sound a like to do the bit in the middle. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

To me this would be near the end of R2.
If we get Mayo, Allinson, O'Leary, Winkelmann and some of the regular standins, Goodier, and like the one for O'leary yesterday, god knows who we will get to replace Wogan & Kennedy when they retire, it will be time to switch off.
R2 is simply becoming a bland, cheesy copy of R1 in the 80s, and sadly too many listeners seem to want that.
The BBC should be providing an alternative to local / commercial not giving us worse than them. They are not there for the ratings and dumbing down to achieve them. |

Someone over at Radio 2 must have really and royally upset the Daily Mail. To Radio 2 I say - keep up the good work.
I'll believe this when I see it happen.
About three years ago, when I was at uni, we had a guy from Radio 1 come in to do a workshop for people involved with the student radio station as they were in the area for the 'big weekend' event. When he found out I was a Radio 2 listener, he told me that Jo Whiley (!) would be soon replacing Bruce. Evidently, these 'inside sources' can know less than the listeners with an ounce of common sense. I really can't see Ken being axed. |

Reading the story in the paper ( not the on-line version) about KB, it sounds like KB is happy to leave R2 in 2010 -( or at least he was in 2002) people don't have to stay doing the same show in the same place until there's a thud on the studio desk. It's just a job - people change jobs all the time to suit their needs and wants in life. It would be no fun otherwise.

I stepped right in to that one, but I don't read the Mail On Sunday so didn't know Piers Morgan wrote there. I did read his piece in the Mail about Ross though.

Great news that Simon Mayo is being lined up to take over the mid morning show on Radio 2.
He will be a great addition to Radio 2. |

Hmm...okay I hadn't read it earlier but now I have. Ken's feelings about moving on seem to come from comments made nearly nine years ago. I do remember him saying just a few months ago, however, that he'll do the show until it's taken away from him... so who knows.
Simon Mayo's a great second choice but unless Ken wants to leave, I don't see why he should be pushed. |

He could do another time slot. He has done early mornings, breakfast, teatime & late night previously.
Although maybe he will go back to Radio Scotland? _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Ken will be 60 by 2011 maybe he decided he wanted to retire at that age? I must say that comments made 8-9 years ago would not necessarily ring true now. He's remarried and had at least 2 more children since then!
To me it's all about Simon Mayo not wanting to move to Manchester than anything else. I remember Nicky Campbell saying he was to take over the JY programme, he blabbed to the press and he hadn't got it after all.
A lot can happen in 2+years!

Indeed Aitch, if he wants to give up his morning show, then fair enough, but if it is a case of him being pushed then that would be outrageous, especially as his show is so successful. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I really hope Ken gets treated with respect. Of course he will leave eventually, but I see absolutely no good reason to replace him just yet. His show is excellent, one of the best on R2, and Simom Mayo is not the person to fill Ken's boots I'm afraid. _________________ MiS |

Amongst other things, they co-own (with The Guardian) most of BBC Radio 2's big-name rival commercial stations. |

Seem like the Journalists and Editors and the Mail have got it in for Radio 2. Wonder where they got those Rumours from?
It would be a bloody shame if Ken is axed for Simon who took over from Simon Bates on Mid-Mornings when he was at Radio 1?
The Mail we are not happy with you lot and I guess some of you will read this? |

Quote: | So this weekend's Mail on Sunday "reveals" that Simon Mayo is in line for Ken Bruce's show on BBC Radio 2.
Of course, given the Mail's mindset concerning the corporation and its stirring in recent weeks, it's surprising they haven't accused Terry Wogan of beating immigrants into eating swans.
It stops slightly short of doing so, but instead reveals "top secret" plans for Ken Bruce to be replaced by Simon Mayo. Crumbs.
"[Radio 2] has been completely humiliated by Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand, who have appalled their listeners," whispered an insider of indeterminate trustworthiness to a Daily Mail hack.
"Then it goes and gets rid of genuine talent. Ken is a revered DJ who has given his life to the BBC and really brings a great deal of magic to Radio 2."
Two points, then. The first is that, as we all know, stations refresh their line-ups continuously. The BBC nationals may be less radical about introducing sweeping change, but they do happen. The departure of Ken Bruce sometime before the BBC moves staff to Salford (which is why Mayo is alleged to be joining Radio 2; he's not keen on relocating his family up North when Five Live moves) isn't really an earth-shattering surprise, is it?
Secondly, while the Mail on Sunday claims Lesley Douglas sealed the deal just before resigning a fortnight ago, we've been hearing this rumour from staff at Western House for months. And months. Whoever the Daily Mail's source is at Radio 2, they're either a) non-existent, b) ill-informed or c) stuck in some sort of hole in space-time.
Given Mayo's popularity at Radio 1 in a similar time slot (Dead or Alive, anyone? Confessions?) it makes perfect sense for him to make the move. So is this a sensational exclusive from the Mail on Sunday, or simply a little more obsessive muck-raking the high of the Russell Brand stupidity ebbs away? We'll let you be the judge. |

So am I, it's really pathetic if you ask me, they even got their knickers in a twist over the coded message in top gear last week (about strictly).
God they are such a bunch of boring, humorless gits.
Glad to hear Ken is staying. |

Well... it's pretty much excepted that Brand has done/said worse things on his radio show previously but they were never listened to by any of these people who like to pass the time with a knife sharpener. So, if it wasn't for the Mail creating the story out of the incident there would have been nothing to brush under the carpet - unless Sachs had sought a public apology which looks rather unlikely. |

No!! I'm I misleading you?. Ross and Brand incident was right to be published, but I mean they are playing games now with Simon taking over from Ken!! The Mail is finding any story to try and upset the listeners who tune to Radio 2? What's next something about Wogan?
As you have reported in another thread Ernie, some other Journalists are ripping into Allinson and Lester so know doubt someone else will get a bashing who works for the station? |

I'm guessing the Bruce story arose because Mayo isn't moving up North and he is being groomed for a show somewhere else. I think there is a grain of truth in the story. As we know these moves are planned well in advance
Cant a radio critic comment on a show in other than glowing terms? I think the criticism of Allinson & Lester was mild. If they cant take it, they should find another profession where their egos are protected. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

As my day usually consists of listening to Ken Bruce in the morning and Simon Mayo in the afternoon (with BBC7 in the middle) I hope they both stay where they are!
As for the bland comments about Lester and Allison - well, it's perhaps a little unfair on Lester but isn't that why the two of 'em are filling in? Completely inoffensive. |

What I find interesting about this angle, is the assumption that Radio 2 listeners read the Daily Mail - so assuming for one moment that is the case- does that mean that those on here who don't read the Daily Mail are not typical Radio 2 listeners, and therefore: - the opinions of those non Mail readers on here, are not necessarily congruent with the R2 listeners as a whole? Try not to be too self-effacing when/if you send your answers to Mail letters page. |
