Haven't always listened but I'll miss it. Enjoy it for one last time!

I'm not going to tune in, but I wonder if he will announce his replacement during the show? |

It's Clive Anderson but only until January Scott. I know you don't like it but it's the kind of radio that will be sadly missed.
Wonder if his producer Anthony Cherry will also retire?

You're right - I don't like Michael Parkinson and his Sunday show (and never have). However, I do hope Iain Smith is wrong in predicting Russell Brand is to move to Sunday mornings, with Russell Howard taking over Brand's Saturday night slot.
I hope Ed Stewart is brought back and replaces Parky. Keep the loudmouths at bay. Like anyone wants to tune into Russell Brand on a Sunday morning shouting and screaming. |

Not by me he won't.
He should have been retired off years ago.
He must have played every single song Frank Sinatra recorded 100 times over.

So what? Other presenters do much the same with other artists.

The difference is Helen, not all presenters get the opportunity to play their own personal favourites. Parkinson's playlist is very biased. Alan Titchmarsh is just as bad, playing only his favourites. |

I agree Helen, just look at the playlist, how many times did we have to put up with Umbrella & Scissor Sisters, at least Frank Sinartra is an icon of popular music and I will never tire of his songs and most of the other artists Parky plays. He will be missed by many R2 listeners, IMHO.

Can you imagine if Steve Wright had control of the playlist? He would play the same six tracks over and over!
Some presenters could not be trusted with being in control of the playlist! |

Exactly BB!
Actually I came back to add that I doubt Parky has played every Frank Sinatra track even once! His catalogue is so vast. _________________ 88 - 91 FM this is Radio 2 from the BBC!

From what people have said in the past, Parky's playlist used to improve whenever he was absent. A fresher variety was offered instead. Hopefully, things will change on that slot from now on. |

Nice closing statement from a listener. Wonder if it will happen though?

From memory Scott, "go travelling if you must, but don't take the music with you". A listener had emailed it to him.
I'll listen again in a bit and correct it if needed.

Yes, the closing statement was a fitting end to a good show, and that he hopes that Radio 2 would take notice of this. The Ian McKellen interview was very good. Clive Anderson is ok in the slot, though now we know he won't be the permanent replacement, I look forward to hearing who will be in the slot come February! |

So what if Parky liked Frank Sinatra. He will be sadly missed. I think the show should be kept the same with a different broadcaster? Why change a format if someone leaves? |

The music has never been more popular, so I cant see why Radio 2 wouldnt keep the format the same. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

We are all as irreplacable as the hole left behind in a bucket of water, when you take your hand out of the bucket. This does not distract from the fact that Parky was hugely popular as was the format and content of his Sunday show, it may not have been to your taste Scott, but don't you know deep down that he was a class act that will be very hard to follow?

I think it will continue with the same format? Request show wouldn't work, as SLS is a sort of request show, and we would hear the same music all the time. Sundays don't need changing anymore.. You need broadcast journalist to present the show. |

True gfloyd, Parky left because of his Oz trip, and the book writing. As for the 6 music crew, Keaveny has only been on breakfast a few months so I doubt he'll move yet, and Russell Howard, well, where exactly would he fit in? Having said that, Scott's right about unpredictable Lesley! Surely if anyone were to move across, it would be Gideon Coe? His Bob Harris covering has been alright, so he has (some) track record on 2. |

I still haven't had a chance to listen to Parky on LA but I have Monday off so will do so then.
Meanwhile, Scott's latter contributions to this thread were moved to the Gripe Section with not unexpected consequences; sorry that he's gone again.

Sorry to say that I tend to agree with a lot of Scott Nelson's comments on this thread and the one that has been moved regarding Parky.
In my opinion the playlist for his show was always just his personal collection-it was extremely narrow, repetetive to say the least , boring, unispiring and dull.
On tuning in (not so regularly these past couple of years I have to admit) I would often think after a short time "I've heard all this chit chat on whatever subject was being discussed before".
Guests, newspaper reviews were never really exciting-perhaps my expectations are too high. |

Thanks Mark, at least your opinion of the show/music is informed through familiar listening.
Doing some accounts this morning and listening to the show, and Parky, in his last show, has an excellent guest in Ian McKellern, is re-visiting old regulars like Buble, Sammy Davis Jnr., Basie, Ella/Louis, Beatles, Sinatra and artistes I first heard on HIS show like Diana Krall, Jane Monheit etc and indeed his show is the only R2 show guaranteed to play their music, indeed the only show on my FM dial.
As mentioned above by igs, that message read out, about leaving the music at R2, is fitting, I for one don't want to loose it.

Cheers John.
No problem with that style of music at all, but just hope Parky's replacement plays a bit more variety/checks the BBC vaults out for some less well known songs/artists etc.
It will be interesting to see who gets to fill Parky's shoes. |

I generally like Clive Anderson but, like everyone who has followed in Michael's footsteps, be it on tv or radio, all the interviews seem rushed, and he cannot resist the temptation to jump in and take over with his own view and witticisms. I'm all for a lively discussion but you sometimes wonder why he asks guests on - poor Jane Horrocks must have felt like she'd been left stranded at the quayside after the great cruise liner Parkinson had sailed off into the sunset.
It was a shame that, his producer having pounced upon the new 4CD collection of Flanders & Swann recordings, he then played the three songs that always get played, rather than something slightly rarer.
His little barbed comment earlier about the novelty of playing a track by someone who was still alive suggests the playlist isn't necessarily to his taste so perhaps the format, or his tenure of it anyway, has a short use-by date. _________________ Ron |

I am now thoroughly enjoying the 11am-1pm stint on Sundays - Parky has been getting on my wick for a while now and Clive is like a breath of fresh air. More power to his elbow says I ! |
