At last! 45 minutes of radio after 5pm without being shouted at, patronised, or made to feel like a 10-year old! Great music, good links, it must be Stuart Maconie resurrecting the art of radio presenting.
As the Beeb need to save money, why not give the gig to Stuart and saved the wasted millions on Evans! _________________ Geddon

45 minutes good radio in a 2 hour show! So the other 1 hour 15 minutes was rubbish?

The 45 minutes was the length of the journey home, and the 120 must be seconds( the length of time that I personally can stand evan before reching for the 'off' button). _________________ Geddon

SM is a really poor choice of stand-in at best. At worst it's Broadcasting suicide to put him on the air at all- on any show, let alone on the most important show of the day. He is the most irritating, smug, self satisfied <enter a word I don't use> on the radio. I've not listened to so many CDs on my journey home in yonks. I can't stand him! He's just not entertaining at all, he always sounds so depressing. After a day in the office I want to be cheered up, not reminded that the world is full of idiots who think that being a wannabe music anorak with access to Google in some way compensates for having no personality at all.
Get him off! |

Sorry Rachel I totally disagree with you, still it would be a dull world if we all liked the same things. I have enjoyed him sitting in for the ginger whinger, who, I find more irritating than any one else on the radio.

While I don't dislike SM, I find him very mediocre.
I think there are loads of more interesting presenters out there, why not use Colin Berry, Keith Skues, Nick Risby or Sue Marchant who broadcast in the Eastern Counties (BBC) and who play a lot greater variety of songs than Stuart ever has. |

I do wish Lesley Douglas would make Stuart Maconie the permanent host of Drivetime. The dual carriageway I use to and from work is currently undergoing essential maintenance, which has resulted in queues of traffic in the mornings and evenings. Terry Wogan has been excellent at keeping my spirits up in the mornings whereas Stuart Maconie has done the same in the evenings. I usually tune into either Smooth FM London or Classic FM on my way home because I just can't handle Chris Evans. He's way too loud.
Chris Evans should be moved to the 2.00 - 5.00pm slot and Stuart Maconie to Drivetime. |

Well, with a sick PC at the moment getting some TLC from the factory, I can't listen again to the stuff I've missed these last couple of weeks, but I have tried to make an effort to listen to SM 'live' during his stand in shifts.
He's certainly different than the usual incumbent - if not shouting or treating the audience like seven-year-olds makes SM bland, then I'm all for blandness, I'm afraid.
I'd be happy for CE to stay on the network as he clearly has a following, but as Scott suggests, put him in SW's slot (so I can't hear him!). _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Better still shunt him to a graveyard spot and bring forward some of the classy overnight presenters who have been 'kept hidden' for far too long. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

After a stressful afternoon in the office, Chris Evans is the last person I want to drive home to. He's too loud and shouts too much. I prefer to unwind and relax on my way home. Stuart Maconie is a good tonic for this and should be made the permanent host of the show. I think his talents are wasted on the evening slot alongside Mark Radcliffe.
Chris Evans and his loud style would be much more suitable for the afternoon slot where he can do what he likes. I wouldn't be listening anyway because radios are banned in the workplace. |

Or, better still, the 2.00am-5.00am slot. Apologies to night-shift workers, though, it's nothing personal! |

Awww, you can't have Janice Long and Alex Lester moved aside for Chris Evans! Those two are the main reasons why many night workers and insomniacs tune into Radio 2! |

How about moving Chris Evans to Sunday mornings, 2.00 - 6.00am? I don't think anyone tunes in at those times, anyway! Well, I sometimes tune into Pete Mitchell. I like him! |

That's because he doesn't need one! Pete Mitchell is in the same league as Stuart Maconie, Janice Long and Alex Lester. That's why they are so popular. Egos aren't necessary in radio. This is why Radio 2 is such a turn-off at certain times of the week. |

From the ego stems personality. You cant have one without the other, as Sinatra used to say. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

It's very true, all though I like Chris Evans. I only think Stuart is going along how the format of the show is set out whilst Chris is off? I think it also down to the accents as people can be divided up and down the country. I'm sure if we had a scouser' on the network then people would pull the presenter up on his or her abilities!! |

I don't agree. If you substitute "confidence" for ego then maybe. I would say that Evans is certainly confident - but he's also an unbearable egotist as well. |

I was sorry to see Stuart go, and it was a real bind to find that CE had come back early. Ruined my Friday night.
I thought it was a stroke of genius for SM to replace the daft "Women's Minute" with "Pie Tunes". Bet CE wishes he had thought of that. Still, give it a couple of weeks and then he will probably reintroduce it as his own invention. |

There are plenty of bog-standard DJs for you, just tune around.
It's funny in this dumbed-down era of broadcasting that a presenter appears on drivetime with a vast knowledge of Music and this counts against him!
Still the music-lovers of this MB know the score.

No it's not a joke Ian. SM is a really poor presenter. He does "appear" to have some knowledge of music but we can all read. Surely the most pleasurable part of music is actually listening to it, not the anorak reading out dull facts given to him by a research assistant. |

Stuart Maconie's musical knowledge is considerable. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of many musical genres - not just Northern Soul! - and he doesn't need to perform a Google search to get the bsic facts. His features in NME were always superb reading, and he has contributed hugely to lots of Tv and radio documentaries. And if does need to do a bit of additional research, surely that's a plus!
I'd rather listen to SM telling me something I didn't know about a subject that interests me rather than have to listen to Evans' incessant prattle about absolutely nothing. |

Surely if you were really interested in a particular kind of music, you would read about in-depth yourself, not rely on the off chance that SM will impart his wealth of knowledge on that very subject at the very time you happened to be listening. How lucky for you that would be: thanks Stuart you've saved me a dig through the musical archives, I was just about to head off to the library to research that very fact.
He's boring and unsuitable for daytime radio! |

I didn't realise that listening to radio was something we did purely for research. Sometimes it's nice to hear good music interspersed with intelligent and informed comment. And it's nice not be patronised by incessant juvenility either!

Not my opinion. My opinion of SM is unprintable here. It's my experience of listening to him. I fully expect the road accident rate to have suffered a significant blip over the last two weeks- falling asleep at the wheel is not good for your health. |
