This is one of my favourite shows on Radio 2.
Why it is only allocated 30 minutes in the schedules.
Can't it be extended to last 1 hour or better still 2 hours.
Indeed can't it be rescheduled to be aired at a more reasonable hour as well.
Not everyone who listens to Radio 2 is a 60's fanatic-I'm certainly not.
There should be more time devoted to the 70's decade in my opinion. |

Would agree Mark, the Sounds Of The seventies does deserve at least an hour and if I had my way it would follow SOTS on Saturday morning as I am a baby boomer boy and just love the 60's music. There was some great music from the 70's, but then there was from the 80's, 90's and is now. If it's good, who cares what era it's from, just chill out and enjoy.

A very fair comment, which has been made before. But will any more notice be taken this time?

The 2 hour slot currently occupied by Mr Wrong on Sunday morning looks very inviting. I would want a show that covered the whole range of 70's music though, not just the charts. There was a heck of a lot of excellent music produced in the 70's from folk and folk-rock through to progrssive rock and sadly hardly any of it gets radio airplay.
Ask under 30s what they think music in the 70's was like and they'll say Disco or Glam-rock , it's sad to think what they've missed. _________________ The wheel keeps on turning...

SLS is effectively the current equivalent of the old Family Favourites and, since a twirl of the dial at the same time will find clones of the thing on a lot of other radio stations, I suspect that it's unlikely to be replaced with anything along the lines of what you're suggesting.
Other than that you've hit the nail on the head. Radio 2 still plays a lot of 70s music in the daytime (that will be its argument for not providing more than the ludicrous 30 mins at the dead of Friday night) but it is all the same stuff, continually topping up the pension funds of Abba, ELO, Bryan Ferry, Phil Collins etc etc. Looking at Steve Harley's last playlist the five tracks played are quite likely to appear in the daytime as well, so one could question the point of his show in even its present form.
What we crave, of course, is the equivalent of a cross between Brian Matthew & Mark Lemarr's 60s programmes - two hours long, wide ranging, rarities as well as the familiar, hosted (or at least scripted) by someone who's knowledgeable and can give insight or information on what he/she is playing.
In our dreams, I suspect... _________________ Ron |

I really miss Steve Harley's show since it was moved to the middle of the night, and I never get round to listen again!
The 70's show ahould be at least an hour and the suggestion to put in the the dire "Sunday I love myself songs" is perfect. 2 hours of 70's followed by the sublime music that Parky plays - bliss! _________________ MiS |

How about this show going out on Friday evenings in the Radio 2 schedules and for 2 hours.
Sorry to say I think Friday nights as they are on Radio 2 are dire-Friday Night is Music night-it should be but the current shows are "stuck in a time warp". Does anybody on these boards listen to Radio 2 after Chris Evans finishes and then until Mark Lamarr comes on at 12 o'clock midnight.
I would like to see Radio 2 shake up the Friday night schedules with some brand new shows/new talent brought in to present them.
What do others think. |

Interesting point Mark!! I wonder what the listeners who are not able to join these message boards would think of those comments? |

Well Mark M, I find Friday nights, after 19:00, eminently listonable, however, 17:00 to 19:00 is definitely unlistonable, IMHO. So who's right & who's wrong, R2's diversity is what makes it so popular. I know that ernie and I differ and post directly oposite opinions on CE, but, we both know that we can agree to disagree and liston to what we want to; help yourself to the retune knob or off switch, I do from 17:00 to 19:00, Monday thru Friday.

Hi Barkingbiker-Currently I do retune my dial on a Friday evening after Chris Evans finishes.
As you say each to their own.
Maybe Radio 2 will update their schedules for a Friday night one day and will include something I like etc. |

I certainly question the point of a 30-minute show such as this, though I do rate Steve Harley very highly as its presenter. I saw Harley & Cockney Rebel quite a lot in the mid-70s and the band was nothing less than excellent every time. What's more, they deserve much more credit than the usual "the band who had a hit with Come Up and See Me"..etc.
What I like about Harley is that he's able to reflect on the amount of bands who were playing the circuit who didn't have much to do with the whole TOTP scene (did you ever see Stackridge on TOTP? I never did - but they were a big name on the college/festival circuit and they opened for the Beach Boys at Wembley in 1976 - or was it Elton John, can't remember).
And not a ghastly tank-top in sight either! (Plenty of great-coats, loons and grand-daddy t-shirts though).
I've heard Harley say that he can't commit to a longer show simply because he's really busy. Shame - even though I'm glad to see him gigging as much now as he ever did. |

I think it's a bloody liberty Sounds of the Seventies has been demoted to midnight Thursdays, with the dire Organist Entertains taking over the Tuesday night 10pm slot. How can Lesley Douglas justify this? It's about time Nigel Ogden and his outdated Blackpool ballroom programme was axed.
Sounds of the Seventies has always had a raw deal on Radio 2. I also think it's unfair Brian Matthew gets 2 hours yet Steve Harley only gets a mere 30 minutes. Perhaps it's about time SOTS was pruned back to an hour, this:
8.00am Sounds of the Sixties
9.00 Sounds of the Seventies
That seems fairer to me. |

I don't know where a 2 hour SOT70s could be broadcast?
Oh, I know! Saturday nights, 9.00 - 11.00pm in place of The Siren. |

Well, once the gingernut decides that he'd rather stay in the pub on Fridays, you could bring the schedule forward by two hours and then shuffle SOT70s in somewhere later in the evening. Sounds pretty good to me. Then I could "listen again" after SOTSixties finishes the following saturday morning.
Watch out Lesley Douglas, I'm after your job!!!!! |

Perhaps Dame Douglas should grant Chris Evans Fridays off? We could then hear an enthusiastic, musically-minded DJ on the show. Somebody like Stuart Maconie!
Sounds of the Seventies follows from 7.00 - 9.00pm. I'm not too sure where Friday Night is Music Night will go, though. |

Harley's 70s music isn't the crap that adorned the charts (put those ghastly tank tops away!) but the other stuff that made the club/venue circuit so good. I'd happily listen to 2 hours of Steve Harley's 70s selections - although it would have to be on Listen again - perhaps when Ross is on or Evans. Or both! |

Wouldn't be so bad instead of Russell Brand, but it's too insular and self-regarding for the end of the working week (and, yes, it's in the wrong slot at the moment too). |

I'm out eating and drinking on a Friday night, so it doesn't matter much when SOT70s actually goes out since I always use the listen again feature - but 2 hours would be certainly be welcomed by me. |

The thing is not everyone has access to Listen Again. This is why I protested against the specialist programming being demoted to graveyard slots of 10pm and beyond. In response to complaints and concerns raised by listeners following the changes last April, Lesley Douglas said all of Radio 2's output is available via Listen Again. This response was not popular with Roger Bolton, presenter of Radio 4's Feedback programme.
Roger raised the point with Lesley Douglas that not every listener has access to the internet. Lesley sympathsised with those listeners but insisted that stats showed a fair amount of the Radio 2 audience use the Listen Again facility. I used it occasionally myself. |
