What a super show from Johnnie this afternoon reflecting on the history of the Pirate Ships! Wish I'd recorded it now...
I have to say I'm thoroughly enjoying the Pirate ship broadcasts from BBC Essex, just music from 64 to 67 of course but it'll do me fine.
Plenty of mistakes and mis-cues but it really dosen't matter, it's truly great radio and in my book, shows how clinically boring some of Radio2 is today! and just how great pop music was from those days.
Johnnie has been just amazing on the ship and I would guess to be completely enjoying his freedom from the cretinous play lists on 2. Even a return to headlight flashing!
Rosko, Cash, Roger Twiggy Day, Keith Skues and Ahern etc.. all still got the gift of the gab - true DJ's ... are you listening Lesley??
As Rosco just said, "at least our music was exciting!" |

I couldn't believe the Emperor Rosko show this evening! he sounded fantastic, just as good as the old days! bubbling with energy and playing superb music with enthusiasm. How does he do it??
This is what we should have on Radio 2!!! c'mon, we're not dead yet! |

Well, it's the last day of the Pirates today...
Getting ready for Johnnie Walker on at 11am with Tom Edwards, Keith Hampshire, Keith Skues, Dave Cash & Ed Stewart. How great is that?
Last night's Johnnie Walker 9 - 12 Show was probably the very best radio programme I've ever heard in my life! even Johnnies wife, Tiggy, joined in for a while.
JW was on top form to say the least, he was flying.
At times, all present on the bridge studio were laughing their socks off having such a good time and enjoying every nano second of the fabulous 60's music.
I had to laugh when JW's headlight flashing was interrupted by a Stenna Line ship passing by! " Oi, get that ship outa the way!!"
Apparently, the station has been bombarded with messages of praise from all over the world let alone the UK, surely this must say something about the state of "Pop" radio today for the forgotten generation...
I for one will miss this station big time when it closes... |

Johnnie's just thrown a copy of the Dubliner's "7 Drunken Nights" over the side of the ship saying he couldn't stand it back then so he won't play it now! |

Oh Lady, you've missed out big BIG time... the pirates are only on until 3pm today and as far as I know, they're not available on listen again.... I wish you could have heard them, absolutely fantastic.
Ed Stewart' etc are on right now... |

Yup, tuned in now! Very good. And Ed sounds much more relaxed and free to speak his mind. I guess one of the great things about pirate radio.
Nice letter just read out about the formulaic, playlisted straight-jacketing of much of today's radio...
(Mr. Baker excepted, of course!) _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

Fantastic. I've been very late getting to this. This is what Radio 2 daytime should be |

Quite! Something else to perhaps mention, people, if you're contributing to this tv documentary.
Just that lovely, loose, unpredictable freedom Pirate Radio had. It was real, warm and genuine. Something Radio 2 has lost along the way.
I fail to see how programming of this nature wouldn't be popular again. People like Dave Cash and Rosko have still got it, and if scheduled alongside more contemporary 'pirate' mavericks like Danny Baker, it'd be the shot of monkey glands this station so badly needs in the parts of the schedule where it has become stale, repetitive and predictable. _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

I sincerely hope that both you and John will get a chance to hear some of the previous days shows, particularly Rosko Cash and JW's, just pure heaven to listen to.
I agree with you Lady, there's no reason at all why these seasoned and talented jocks couldn't be on Radio 2 playing the kind of music we want to hear!
Rosko makes the music leap into life! non stop excitement! what a contrast to most of Radio 2's shows.... it's depressing really.
Bring on Radio 2 1/2... |

I've said this before and I'll say it again. As more and more people are buying and listening to digital radio there is great scope, particularly at the weekend, for split frequency Radio 2 broadcasting. For example have 'Pirate Radio 2' on FM and the normal output on digital. (Or vice versa) This not only provides diversity and a bigger audience, but also encourages more who wish to hear the 'other' programming to buy digital radio (before we lose analogue transmissions completely, though I think that's still a way off) _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

Yup, great show by Johnnie, very interesting - far better than the content of his usual Sunday afternoon show. |
