Great show on Saturday, back to the usual high standard after a recent slight dip.
The Playing Hard to Get feature is proving as inspiring as I thought it would and today's accompanying story was very moving.
It's always great to hear Matt Monro on any programme and Vanity Fare's Early in the Morning is one of my special ones.
I got the Billy Fury question wrong. I thought it was Play It Cool, not I Gotta Horse!

Heard today's show in bits as our elder grandson is staying with us right now so shall probably employ Listen Again.
Little Peggy March's I Will Follow Him makes me think of Whoopi Goldberg in the film Sister Act, which went through what was then 30 years of back catalogue to include this item.
Cliff Richard's The Young Ones always has a lazy summery feel to it so it's a surprise to note that it was at its height during a cold January and February in 1962.

I wasn't able to devote all my attention to it either, but it was a great and varied show, as usual. I do think, however, that the ballad spot sticks out like a sore thumb in the middle of all the froth around it - this week Bobby Vinton sandwiched between Herbie Goins and Shirley Ellis. We could do with two tracks of that ilk run together. _________________ Ron |

Great show this week from what I've heard so far! "I Will Follow Him" holds no memories for me other than a really good song from those days but Arthur Brown! great! slightly different version too. Reminds me of my Bingo days!
Did I hear Brian say "Ringo I Love You" (which I'd never heard before) was recorded by Bonnie Mason who later became Cher??
"I'm So Tired" by the Fab Four prompted me to hear it again on Anthology, and great to hear "All or Nothing" ( what a band!) and "Come and Stay With Me" by my childhood heart throb Marianne Faithful.
I caught "Bonanza" at the end but not as good as last week's Avengers theme! Must be one of my all time favourite pieces of music. |

Been away this weekend so haven't heard SOTS. The fact that 'I Will Follow Him' was on is enough to make me check out the playlist at least.

Herbie Goins! I used to go down to the Bodega on Cross St in Manchester to hear him sing with Alexis Korner and his band. Ah, happy days. We used to call him Hairy Groins, but then the young are not noted for their subtlety of wit. |

Again we were minding our elder grandson so I heard the show in bits. Thank goodness for Listen Again.
Who was the Scottish interviewer quizzing the Beatles about their MBEs in the snippet that we heard? Does anyone know?
In Ferry Cross the Mersey, Gerry Marsden avows his intent to stay in his native area. Did he actually do so or did he join the drift to the Home Counties? Nice film, by the way. I saw it donkey's years ago but would watch it again if the opportunity arose.
My two special treats this morning were the instrumental Soul Coaxing and Eden Kane's Forget Me Not. I've happy memories of endlessly spinning the latter on my brother's Dansette record player!
No competition right now. Has this been hit by the current embargo or is it a concession to the current wave of postal strikes?
But for me the show is right back on track after its recent slight lapse.

Did I hear right this morning, Ian, when someone wrote or phoned in to say that they thought the show had gone 'downhill, but was picking up recently'? _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I tthink you did but I was half listening and half giving my grandson breakfast so I'll have to check this out on Listen Again.
The person criticised recent editions of the show and then asked for a request!
I don't entirely disagree with what was said but they have put some new features in now and have backed off a little bit on gratuitous comments re the monetary value of records.
I don't see what else they can do without spoiling the programme's character and hope it continues for a long time yet.

You did hear right Cherskiy, and they said that they thought the show was becoming, or had become more like a collection of specialist or collectors rare tracks, or words to that effect, to which Brian thanked them for their comments, which had been noted. I have tried dozens of times to get a request played, never been lucky even though one of the tracks I have requested, several times, I am almost certain has never been played on SOTS. Some people have had more than one request played, I just don't bother trying anymore. Maybe if I complained about the show I might get a request played? I do feel that since having a new producer that the show has lost it's edge, or maybe I just preferred Johnnie Walker sitting in for Brian, I am not certain.

I received my SOTS polo shirt last week for having the three in a row of Elvis film duets a couple of weeks back, so it can be done with perseverance, BB. As regard the comments by Brian, it could be seen as a comment on Roger the vocalist or Phil the collector as producer. By the way, last night on TV's 'Millionaire' show the 'phone a friend' was a 'Phil Swern!' |

Hi Briant,
Do you only get the shirt for the '3 in a row'? I didn't get anything when I had an 'Avids' request on Johnnie's last show.

Loved Soul Coaxing in its time. Raymond Lefevre was the French equivalent of James Last - sadly none of his albums, even a Best of, or the North of Watford collection from which the track was taken, is currently generally available. _________________ Ron |

Hello H. Perhaps so, as I got one for my previous Three in a row of 'Anti-Protest' songs a few years back. That one was a bit small, but this new one is XXL and fits a treat! People read the logo on the shirt and ask where I got it from! |

There is a constant need to strike a balance between familiar music and obscurities. Whatever you do to excess will alienate someone. I thought that Saturday's programme got the balance about right in this regard.
What I'd really like is some comparative audience figures--firstly, in respect of the present day compared with the time when BM was off sick and secondly before and after the change of producer. Are these available?

It's me birthday--a milestone one coming up in 2008!
A family lunch is in preparation even as I type.
What nicer way to start the day than with SOTS? Lots of favourites and one or two to tease me.
An arranger called Carl Davis was mentioned. Is this the same person as the film score/crossover conductor, who's married to actress Jean Boht?
The Hard to Get disc can't have had its airplay confined to Radio London, as I remember it.
Nice gesture to have two Elvis tracks today.
Staggered to hear that Johnny Todd, the source of the Z Cars theme, is a Northumbrian song as for decades I'd thought that it was Liverpudlian in origin. Must do a websearch. Actually there was quite a vogue for charting TV themes at the time with Steptoe and Son, Dr Kildare and Maigret all scoring some success. And then, of course, there was Stranger on the Shore.
I'm always complaining that R2 doesn't play enough light music so SOTS could redress the balance a bit by including the March from Trevor Duncan's Little Suite, which was composed in 1960 and was the theme tune of Dr Finlay's Casebook for much of the decade.
Look forward to more next week.

The Beatles track played today was a bit below par, as BM hinted, but of course they had to include it in a full survey.
The Letter to the Beatles track which preceded it was very amusing.
Feel that the new producer has now found his feet, as today's selection was simply superb. Lots of my special favourites amongst the familiar items (Noel Harrison, the Four Seasons, the Crickets, Duane Eddy, Unit 4 Plus 2 and others) and different to have a selection of Goffin and King B sides on Three in a Row.
Shan't hear the next two editions as they go out because of holiday, so Sky Plus will be recording them for my indulgence upon my return.
Looking forward to Dale Winton's Sixties Special on Bank Holiday Monday.
Tomorrow I shall have a change of musical style, as I attend for the first time the annual get-together of the Light Music Society at Alston Hall, Longridge, Lancs. Report to follow!

Only caught the end of SOTS this week, from Cilla's Italian Job onwards (contemporary Sandie Shaw recorded her hits in French, German, Spanish and Italian, and they're much better preserved, or at least, much better than that version of Surround Yourself With Sorrow sounded).
There were 55 episodes of Steptoe & Son (plus four specials) rather than 20, as Brian said after playing Old Ned.
I note that Phil Swern is also responsible for Dale's Pick of the Pops, and what a dire week that was - 29th August 1981. All those ersatz medley tracks in the Top 20 (Tight Fit etc), and he missed two of them out! _________________ Ron |

Phil Swern was producing POTP on R2 when Alan Freeman presented it before Dale took it on, remember the 'Ken Dodd tickling stick' thing he did during the chart rundown? I don't see how Phil can be held responsible for the medley craze around at the time though.
Not only does he produce POTP & SOTS but also Bob Harris' Saturday into Sunday show. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I wonder if he produced yesterday's 60s special with Dale Winton? it was a fantastic show! luckily I recorded some of it including the amazing Beatle section... one after the other of fabulous hits.

I know he used to present loads of shows like this on Radio Trent, Chiltern and Beacon many years ago. So I reckon he did have some influence with what music was chosen. It's nice to hear him live. Although I did wonder which frequency he was trying to say in the early part of the show? |

I wondered if you were listening SanteFe. That Beatles medley was fab! I liked the way they put several other tracks together as well.
Reminiscent of the Pirate in some ways (I've not forgotten BTW ).

No, just a comment on a poor chart that week/year.
Record producers milking a formula - five of those medley things in the top 20, and if I were never to hear Don't You Want Me and Abacab again it wouldn't be the end of the world. _________________ Ron |

Have recorded the two editions of SOTS that I missed when I was on holiday.
Whether I'll ever get four hours to hear them all the way through remains to be seen.
So I looked on the website playlist section, to find that it jumps from 25 Aug to 8 Sep, omitting 1 Sep.
It looks as though In My Life must have been the Beatles A-Z item on 1 Sep. Can anyone confirm?
Small additional point--BM doesn't seem to be getting a name check in the Radio Times listings now. Why not?

1. Yes it was, Ian. Can't tell you much else about the show - it was one of those days when it was on but I didn't get to listen to much of it.
2. Pressure of space, I presume. So much is crammed into the listings pages and in order to give synopses of the special/one-off shows like the Marc Bolan Story, and I suppose the Comedy Hour requires an explanation to prove that it's supposed to be funny _________________ Ron |

I loved the Letter To The Beatles song! One of the Four Preps, who sang this, was the father of the Belland sisters in Voice of The Beehive. _________________ We made a land where crap is king and the good don't last for long.

Did anyone notice today that Brian Matthew didn't give out who sang Over The Wall We Go in the Playing Hard To Get spot?
He just said it was on the David Bowie Songbook CD. It was credited to Oscar - actually Paul Nicholas. His real name was Oscar Beuselinck. _________________ We made a land where crap is king and the good don't last for long.

Neither did he back-announce the Maureen Evans track, or remind us of the 'New Orleans' trio of tracks. While we, who have online access, can look at the 'Music played' page, what of those who don't and therefore can't? Please can these 'Steve Wright moments' be outlawed. Great show in itself but a bit accident-prone. In addition to what's already been mentioned, the (very good) Maureen Evans track was based on the Pizzicato from Delibes' ballet Sylvia, not on Tchaikovsky. It's a shame whem such a first-class show is marred by careless bits of research!

Hands up all who raked through the Sunday market/car-boot sales looking for the Bowie Songbook CD! Long deleted and offered at three-figure sums on t'internet.
There seemed to be an unhealthy obsession with telling us when and how artists died this week, and I've never before noticed Brian talking over the end of so many records (another SW trait).
The show seems to have acquired an unofficial Hollies Spot; much as I liked them I'm not sure playing one every week is warranted - perhaps Phil is going to do an A-Z when the Beatles one comes to an end. _________________ Ron |

Brian Matthew used to play Helen Shapiro records on a regular basis and said he was in her fan club or something similar. I suppose every DJ plays 'favourites' of his or her own. I'd be playing lots of Elliott Murphy records if I had my own radio show! |

The amount of Helen Shapiro tracks would kill me, because the backing singers always put me in mind of the Morecambe and Wise sketch where they mime the 'yeah yeah yeahs' where Tom Jones sings 'Exactly Like you'! _________________ We made a land where crap is king and the good don't last for long.

Re Saturday's edition, interesting that John Lennon never liked his own composition it's Only Love, as it's one of my favourites!
It's a couple of years since Julie Grant's Come to Me was on--a lovely piece, enhanced by its cor anglais section. It did in fact just make the Top 40 in 1964.
Looking forward to two helpings of BM next weekend.
