|
|
New parking spaces for people over the age of 65 are being trialled in three car parks in west London.
The scheme, said to be the first of its kind in the UK, will be rolled out across Hillingdon if successful.
It is hoped it will be extended to street parking, supermarkets and local shopping centres.
Civic Centre car park in Uxbridge, King Ends South car park in Ruislip, and Fairfield Road car park in West Drayton are included in the scheme.
There will be six spaces allocated for those over 65 in each of the car parks during the month-long trial.
Leader of the council, Ray Puddifoot, said: "With approximately 35,000 older people living in the borough and many others visiting and working here, we hope that the new initiative will ease the parking experience for all those who use their car as a main form of transport." He added: We're very proud of our elderly people in Hillingdon. They've done a lot for building this country and our borough and they deserve some respect and a degree of assistance."

According to Breakfast this morning, the spaces were for 'over 50s'.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

55+ according to the news. I'm now 55+ ( a couple of days) and I don't walk with a stick. _________________ Geddon

Me too, 55 last June, and I think it would be an insult! I don't need or want any privileges because of my age... in fact, I'm more sprightly than most of the younger adult people I know.
(Actually, I park as far away as possible from the supermarket to avoid drongo's hitting my car with their doors! )
But, I do think insurance companies should give very heavy discounts to drivers aged over 50 if they haven't had an accident or ever been done for speeding etc.
