Somehow I missed doing a critique last week.
Today I loved hearing the Vernons Girls in their Liverpool personae, singing the praises of the Beatles. Never heard it before. If you enjoyed it, listen out for two more tracks by the VGs, You Know What I Mean and Funny All Over.
There now seem to be three versions of the Hollies' Yes I Will on the go.
The Applejacks' Tell Me When is one of my real favourites. They were almost a one-hit wonder--but what a hit!
Mention of Carter-Lewis having penned the Flowerpot Men's A Walk in the Sky reminded me of their own hit from 63, Your Mother's Out of Town. Have never heard it since it was in the charts but for me it encapsulates its time perfectly.
A good idea to end programmes with TV themes of the period. I remember my mum got hooked on the Gurney Slade series.
Still my favourite two hours of the week.

Mine too! An oasis in a desert of increasing blandness. |

A jolly good show, with the usual occasional niggles, aimed at the producer.
Why does PS have to tell us how much one of the originals (not necessarily the rarist) is worth today?
Satchmo's sounded like a fish out of water in the assembled company.
I'm sure he played the Dolly Parton just a few weeks ago, and then yet another version of Yes I Will. There are lots of other Hollies oddities. _________________ Ron |

Guilty as charged, m'lud! I requested those Elvis film songs played on this weeks SOTS. The first one was Elvis and Marilyn Mason (a famous Liverpool writer sent me a tape with that one on! ) Then came the Nancy Sinatra duet with The King, though she didn't have a lot to do here, unlike her later fab stuff with Lee Hazlewood. Finally, Elvis met his match with Ann-Margret with 'The Lady loves me' which another Elvis fan had also requested. If Helen May and John H read this, thanks for the mention on the Radio 2 MB! |

Excellent!
I heard SOTS in bits yestersay so don't intend to offer any comments--except that I was amused that they played the Juke Box Jury theme, as the programme offered the main source of competition to BM's show Thank Your Lucky Stars on ITV!

Enjoying this week's SOTS so far! Cliff's "It'll be me" was always one of my favourites and a great start to the show.
I had to smile at "Valerie" by the Monkees, I'll never forget the oh so serious face of Davey Jones whilst banging his tambourine and singing this song on the TV shows.
Also interesting to hear the story behind the "stretched picture" album cover for the Beatles "Rubber Soul" I like little snippets like this.. |

Don't see the point of telling us what a vinyl single is worth.
All the records in the BBC Gramophone Library are Demonstration Not For Sale discs.
For example a white Parlophone label with a big red A on it.
If you look under ebay under Demo singles there are 2 Beatles demos and they want 2 grand each.
The BBC have every record ever made and sadly tens of thousands were put into the library over the last 30-40 years and have never even been touched.
I remember Brian saying years ago that they couldn't do a particular Avids alert because the vinyl copy of this non hit was missing from the library. _________________ The Voice of reason in a MAD MAD world |
