Well, the music was well played but the programming was appalling, they only played a few of the Enigma variations and they played two movements of the cello cncerto in the first half or the show and half an hour later the last two movements. Ridiculous, and very much disrespectful to Elgar. How could Charles Hazlewood and the cellist agree with this playlist order:
Pomp and Circumstance March No. 4
Serenade For Strings 1st movement
Cello Concerto -1st Movement
Cello Concerto -2nd Movement
Chanson De Matin
Fantasia and Fugue In C Minor (Bach arr. Elgar)
15min intermission (about John Barrie)
Enigma Variations Intro-No 1 - No 4 - No 9
Cello Concerto - 3rd Movement
Cello Concerto - 4th Movement
The Crown Of India Suite - Interlude
Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 |

I agree. The decision to split the Cello Concerto like that seemed a really odd one. Either play selected highlights from it, or play the whole thing. Chopping it up and plonking completely different stuff in the middle is nonsense.
I didn't think much of the interval choice either. One minute we were in Elgar land, the next we had Adam Faith singing What Do You Want. Jarring gear change time! Janey Lee Grace didn't sound very convincing with the John Barry stuff either. Like someone reading a script without much interest in - or sympathy for - the music.
On the positive side, I found Charles Hazelwood's hosting of the concert lively and interesting. |

Can't say I was too bothered by 'the programming' It was just nice to hear the music. |

Didn't hear this but it sounds like a missed opportunity. An interesting choice of music, which didn't just dwell on the obvious, but what a dog's dinner of a running order!
