Nose art is a tradition that has been banned many times, but it always comes back. My feeling is that in unofficial form it is an important depiction of the aircrew's vivid imagination, to customize their "kite", normally portrayed by a budding groundcrew artist. It is a tradition that goes back to WW1 and probably started by the infamous "Red Baron" and quickly copied by the RFC and then the RAF, in it's infancy and later by most other airforces, particularly the USAF. There have, however, been many official nose art graphics, these will probably continue as they are normally squadron crests, ie tigers head for 74 Sqdn. If these nose art graphics offend, then don't look at them as they raise the morale of the aircrew, which, IMHO, is more important.
