|
|
Steve Wright has been on UK Radio for almost 30 years he left Radio 1 in 1995 and a year later heard on the nations favourite Radio 2.
He's been doing the same show for almost 20 years and seems to be keeping on the top of the UK Radio market and not many listeners quite understand how he can still keep doing this.
I just wonder what drives the listeners to his show as it's not really changed that much over the years? I listen maybe because he's a ikon on UK Radio!! Sounds a funny and bizarre saying. |

Radio is familiarity.
Same with The Archers on at the same time each night, week in week out.
Steve's show is the same.
Jimmy Young did 12-2 for 30 years and still had great listening figures.
A lot moan about SW but the ratings are still pretty high which in my book means the vast majority must like what they hear. |

My office has Steve Wright on in the afternoon, because he isn't too taxing to listen to and his music is easy on the ear without being distracting - most of the time. Possibly a lot of workplaces have him on!! |

Thus the 'captive market' which I suspect will inflate many a presenter's listening figures.

I remember listening to him on radio 1 back in the 80's, I see his show as a sort of nostalgia trip given that is hasn't changed any
I quite like Wrighty. |

Agree with the above comments - I used to listen to SW years ago but now only if I'm at home and nothing else to do - I also prefer Radio to TV.
Agree that it's a familiarity thing, cos I also listen to the Archers!!! |

I think you either have or you have not got style. My only wish is that Steve Wright would adopt a more scathing approach to poeple on the Big Quizz. Phone in if you dare . |

Hmmmmmm not a tricky question, Mark. The stand-in cover for the big show was ( and I'm not going to pull any punches here) plain rubbish last week. So yes after last week anything .... even SW being back is an improvement. I wonder though, if it was a deliberate choice to have such a poor presenter, standing in last week..... It certainly makes SW sound good by comparison. It would have been a different story if Richard Alinson had covered last week. |

I agree with Rachael. As much as Wrighty is getting a bit stale , in my opinion, he is at least alive. His replecement over the last week or so simply was not up to daytime standard and as wooden as oak panelling. Perhaps dame Lesley listened and realised the mistake (or maybe not!)
The main person that I felt sorry for was Bobbi Pryor.

Thankfully, I have discovered a new station on DAB, "The Jazz", and I find it a million times better than the unspeakable SW!! _________________ MiS |

Seems odd how no-one decent was given the job of covering for SW.
Still, can't go upsetting the "talent" (and I use the term loosely) by putting someone good in and showing them up for how poor they are.
Put it this way, I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for Mark Radcliffe to cover for Wrighty again. _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |

(Although I notice Radcliffe is doing lots of documentaries at the moment - I wonder if that's to balance out a possible move to a more mainstream slot?) |

It was a strange lineup how the cover presenters were picked to do which shows over the festive period? I wonder if they sort this out between themselves? |

He does keep playing those madness songs on his show. I wonder if this is some sort of coded message towards Suggs who is on Virgin Radio at the sametime? |

I dont think anyone should be on for 3 hours each afternoon to be quite honest. It would be better to cut it down to 2 hours and do something interesting with the other hour.
I think Dale would need a foil if he was going to do a full week. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Ed Stewart was good in the afternoons, so I think Dale would be good too.
I wonder if it either be Mark Goodier or Alex Lester next time? |

Hmmm. He normally gets on my wick, but in his last few weeks on Afternoons I did enjoy it. He genuinely likes the music (he's the only daytime DJ I've ever heard play 10,000 Maniacs so I must grudgingly respect that) and his interviews are excellent - vastly superior to any by Allinson. But, to be fair, so are most people's. |

I thought that nice Mr. Radcliffe was wonderful in the SW slot recently and I'd very much like to see do more daytime stuff. He's one of the few presenters who doesn't patronise his listeners and his musical knowledge is top notch.
I thought his recent doc about the Feelgoods was superb, by the way! Let's get rid of that idiot Evans and have more of this kind of stuff, please!

Did I hear SW say today that the first TV drama went out live in November 1939?
This can't be right, as TV transmissions were suspended throughout the war.
Did I hear right?

You're right, and Wright's Wrong (as usual). The first television drama took place from Alexandra Palace on November 6th, 1936. The service was pulled off-air as soon as the threat of war increased (by which time sufficient cathode ray tubes has been produced by EMI and Marconi anyhow - that being the cover for the existence of the BBC Television Service!).
Thanks to Mr. Sailyour (ex BBC TV studio systems engineer) for that info.

Right in the middle of a Mickey Mouse cartoon, which just so happened to be the first programme shown after the service resumed post-war. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Yes. The resumption of transmission was announced in the same manner as Terry Wogan returning from a false fire alarm. Now I know who he copied! _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |
