As the majority of the Radio 2 Message Boards are closing, maybe this is the ideal first poll. |

Thanks for starting off the polls.
It's significant that ALL the Radio 3 forums are remaining on the BBC website. OK they are mainly well-educated musicians, composers, teachers and serious music nuts at R3MBs but they have had some trouble over there, and many a harsh word has been aimed at Roger Wright the R3 controller, and they have at least three persistent trolls who are actually very funny and are tolerated because they are not abusive.
So the R3mb's survive I think mainly because they stay on topic 99% of the time, the main one is about classical music ON R3 and the others are programme-specific. Moderation activity is very low and is rarely needed.

Radio 2's diversity has been the message boards downfall. Radio 2 is like a buffet : you dont eat everything on the table. Some people are not mature enough to grasp that and whine about the stuff they dont like when really there are more than enough good things for them to enjoy.
Lets hope we get people signing up who are mature enough to respect that other people enjoy things that dont appeal to themselves and that things they dont get or understand are not necessarily bad. |

The people who moderate these boards.
Do they get paid?
Do they literally sit for hours on end reading messages?
Not sure if this was cost cutting or an easy way to stifle all the bad feeling about over paid presenters and big salaries to the chosen few.
Either way i think this board will over the months certainly be the one to contribute to.

I think they're generally BBC office staff who moderate the boards on a voluntary basis. |

The problem with the boards is that they cause a lot of upset among some of the presenters (and staff) who then have tantrum at their agents who then phone up the controller. The message boards on the BBC have generally caused a lot of grief and many are quite happy to see the back of them. We will never know the real truth. But isn't the message board supposed to be part of the community and tell the network how the listeners feel or enjoy on Radio 2? Good grief if presenters can't take comments off the public who pay the licence fee then they are in the wrong job.
I also think most of the staff have been moved to other posts in the network and can't keep monitoring the message boards. I wouldn't beleive what was all said it's been done to save money, thats a load of Bull.. |

I suspect we'll never hear the real reasons, but I think Mark has a point about certain points stinging where it hurts.
I presume that market research is used to determine who is popular and worth retaining along with the likes of the audience figures, etc. - would messages on the boards be taken into consideration too?
Considering most of the messages I saw recently on the R2 MBs weren't exactly 'on message' with the station's current policy of attracting 'names' rather than proven broadcast talent, I'm not surprised in these days of corporate 'spin' that they're pulling the plug.

The R2 and other Beeb MBs are being closed/trimmed down to size because they're not popular with the masses and they're not "core business". |

Also the current listeners comments on the MB's is around 45% bad, and does tarnish the networks image. The moderators can't monitor it a lot, and can't remove feedback which doesn't break house rules. So the BBC and the controller have decided to pack up shop. It's all BBC spin, but who cares? |

So if we'd just posted "Love the Show, Steve" ad infinitum the message boards would have stayed put?

The 6 music boards survive too. No mention on any of them being axed yet. |

Copy from one of the hosts, posted today 11/12/06:
The News & Current Affairs section will close at approx 10.30am tomorrow (Tuesday 12 December).
There will be four topics, but JV will also be closing.
The fourth topic will be based around Bob Dylan's new radio show. The Eurovision topic is very likley to return next year. |

I think you'll find that the format and style of this Message Board is much better than the antiquated In-House technology that the beeb ones used.
Well done on breaking out alone, I'm sure you won't regret it _________________ Chris Evans' Breakfast - doesn't sound quite as good as Chris Evans' Drivetime but good nonetheless! |

Its gone very quiet over on the old boards. Even the mods on the old R2 message boards are hoping that the number of postings will pick up over there after Christmas. There is only so many things to say about Bob Dylan or your top 5,000 Christmas songs... _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I think the general concensus at BH is that the Messageboards all over the BBC's web presence were a bit embarrassing when Licence Fee negotiations are at such a critical stage. Basically, they bottled out!

This is because the BBC don't like the truth or people voicing their opinions! Lesley Douglas clearly didn't like the amount of negativity thrown towards Chris Evans, Dermot O'Leary, Steve Wright, Russell Brand, Sarah Kennedy, Elaine Paige, Desmond Carrington and most other Friday night and Sunday presenters/programmes. Oh, she didn't like being heckled on the boards, either. |

No it isn't, it's because the spam-laden and apparently out of control boards were attracting political attention at a critical time. Like I said above.
How do I know?

Earlier this year, it was in the press that the Radio 5 Live bosses and presenters were "up in arms" over the amount of negative postings on there directed to the station. If you think Radio 2 is being dumbed down then you ain't seen nothing yet. Radio 5 Live is awosh with c*** presenters, some of which aren't fit enough to be on the airwaves. Ratings are at an all-time low. Now the BBC have closed the board to prevent freedom of speech.
The Points of View board is a waste of time these days because it's like the Gaza Strip on there some days. |

No they haven't, they're paranoid about the pressure "from above" in the light of the current negotiations. I keep telling you!!!!

No...I wasn't the only one who complained about the dinosaurs over there...it seemed perfectly fine, in your eyes, for people to gripe about Chris Evans and Russell Brand, yet should anyone complain about the granny garbage, you didn't like it. |

Yes but you and two others were a vast minority, so 'we' was not appropriate.

"We" being you and your alter-egos, of course! It must get pretty crowded in that house of yours at times.

Not necessarily. Some posters on here aren't exactly happy with what Lesley Douglas is doing to Radio 2 (yourself included). |

Good old British seaside humour based on tired innuendo. It was popular in the 50s and 60s apparently.

I dont think the bosses liked the press getting wind of the messageboard posters reactions to Chris Evans getting drivetime and Russel Brand being signed up.Thats the most likely explanation for the 'culling' |

The problem is the message board isn't really been policed enough as there is still some off topic threads being posted. They have stuffed themselves up really. Personally you wont stop that unless everyone is put into pre-mod. That will take up to much time for them, as they have cut back there work load. |

Had a good look earlier at the message boards over on the BBC.
The ones for Radio 2 include some very intersting topics and a load of new posters.
It seems very civilised and pleasant. I wonder if some of the posters were put off previously by the antics of a few troublemakers-I think so. |
