Back in the days of the R2 boards, there was a list - oh, how they loved a list - of favourite female singers. I posted my ten, which included Vera. Most people thought I was joking, but I wasn't. Her voice reached parts of me that others couldn't get near. And her singing always reminded me of hearing my Mum singing in the kitchen. I hope she gets the send off that she truly deserves.
I did get to see her back in 1995, at the 50th anniversary of VE Day, in The Mall, with my girls, who were 13 and 11 then. We all loved her, as most did. _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

Very sad news about Vera. . It's a word often (imho) misused but she really was a legend.
103 a great age, the same as my granny when she went.

Dame Vera - a true National Treasure.
She didn't do too badly after a singing teacher said she couldn't train her voice - that it wasn't a natural voice.
Lovely to hear her daughter, this morning, on Radio 4 acknowledging some of the tributes that poured in, from all over the world, for her Mum.

I met Dame Vera on several occasions (I worked three miles away from he home in Ditchling) and even sat next to her at lunch one day. A charming, down to earth lady with no airs or graces or pretensions. _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

Thanks OR. I used to go through Ditchling twice a day and it was nightmare. Many and varied were the ubchristian things I had to say about it. Can't complain about Friday though. I was at Woodavle six months ago for my uncle's funeral. He only had one airman! _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |
