I was sad today to hear the news that that well known Gulf War American General Norman Schwartzkopf had passed away
I had the rare pleasure of meeting him when - just after the Gulf War had ended in 1992- he came to Britain and spent three days at a hotel run by friends of mine in a remote area of the Black Mountains in Monmouthshire which I visit regularly and I happened to be there with my former wife when he arrived
There were American bodyguards and secret service men all over the place and we were the only other guests allowed to stay there that weekend simply because the proprietor could vouch for us and that we did not present any security risk :roll
I had a very brief conversation with him one evening when he asked me whether I could recommend a decent British real ale and quite naturally I suggested he tried the Ruddles County which he duly did so I guess I can say I actually gave some advice to the great Stormin' Norman
He seemed a very nice guy and from what my friends told me he was a model guest being considerate and polite at all times although apparently that could not be said about some of his entourage
Whatever people may think about the rights and wrongs of the Gulf War as far as I am concerned he was a decent human being who was simply doing his job to the best of his ability and I think at the end of the day the politicians carry the can for these rather distasteful events and quite rightly _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

ruddles, great story and I agree with your comments re Stormin Norman getting lumbered with one of the big jobs of that decade, and just getting on with it. _________________ -

He was a larger than life character if ever there was one
I heard on the news that he shunned a political life, after his army career came to an end, to do charitable works..was rather nice to hear that.
