I wanted to read this for that bit about when he slagged the Bay City Rollers on air! I can understand his reasons - my sister didn't at the time.
His chronology wanders a bit - he talks about events in 1969 and then talks about getting Lou Reed's 'Walk On The Wild Side' played when it wasn't a hit until 1972. I guess he was confusing it with the problems he had getting Derek & The Dominoes' 'Layla' into the programme in 1969 - the powers that be said it was 'too heavy for the housewives', which makes me feel that some things never change. _________________ We made a land where crap is king and the good don't last for long.

Johnnie was on 'The Wright Stuff' this morning plugging his book. He seemed to be very confused about lots of things! I didn't agree with his views on drugs either. Also are nearly 100% of banknotes contaminated with cocaine as the programme claimed? |

I know I'm a bit late on this one, but I've been reading it on and off lately, mostly the 'drivetime' period, very interesting and touching at the same time.
Graciously, Mr.Walker chooses not to criticise the present controller over her drivetime debacle, though if you read the chapter on JW losing his drivetime spot, you'd certainly agree with many of the posters on here, that she's done much harm. |

It is a fine book, for sure. I cannot wait for the sequel! Johnnie is much loved and admired by his BBC colleagues present and past. A true gent. |

I enjoyed Johnnie's book very much. He's had an interesting and emotional life and the book filled in the gaps between his Caroline and BBC days. He's appearing at a venue in Folkestone next month and I am looking forward to hearing more about his life experiences and future plans. _________________ Nilbert Zilbert

You'll enjoy it, I'm sure. He's now well into his stride with these sessions and they're hugely entertaining. What comes across is that he's exactly the same person off-mic as he is on-mic.
When I met him soon after the release of his book in Milton Keynes I was privileged to spend about 10 mins chatting with him (he happily signed my copy of the book, too) and I was struck my what a nice bloke he is.
It's such a shame that he's been sidelined as a presenter at Radio 2 as the controller favours egotistical idiots, but to be honest I think he's adjusted now and is quite content with his lot. He's definitely at ease with giving his one-man shows and they must be a nice little earner for him. He did one again in our area recently - at The Stables Theatre in Wavendon, Milton Keynes - but I couldn't get to it. |

I've got tickets for his show in Warrington next month. Looking forward to it!

Mrs Zilbert and I saw JW last week and we both enjoyed his show. He tended to keep pretty much to the events as detailed in his autobiography but he came over as a real gentleman who seemed to be delighted that so many of us had turned up to hear his stories and take on life. The most interesting part of the evening was when he answered audience questions. I too met him afterwards to have a quick chat and also obtained the obligatory autograph. What a nice bloke. Well worth the entrance fee. _________________ Nilbert Zilbert

He is so nice isn't he! I'm so glad I managed to get to see him after hearing so much about his shows and having listened to him for so many years. The evening left a big impression on me.
