I always thought that was the Zimbabwe President's name backwards....

I dated a guy from up north and I think 'Eeh! Buy Gum' roughly translates as, 'I'm not paying that much for b***** pizza!' _________________ Eternal nothingness is fine if you happen to be dressed for it. |

To those south of Watford Gap, It's Bah Gum. I'm not sure of the gum, but bah is a derivation of 'bar' ie without .

"Bar T'at" means 'without a hat'.... and in case anyone thinks I'm a Yorkshire Pudding because I know that, BTW, I'm not - I'm Geordie (well, Northumbrian, really) and proud of it! _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Yes, people from that neck of the woods (and Sheffield) do use 'duck' (like some up this way use 'hinny').... at work I have to speak to people from that area on occasions - it's not so bad when a woman calls me 'duck' but I do start to wonder when a bloke says it too.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I am afraid to say that from Derby upto Donnie they tend to call everybody, me duck; now here in Lincolnshire it's mate, which I cannot get used to, even though been here for 25 years

Alnwick's a lovely town, Rachel - not sure if it still holds the 'Most Desirable Place to Live in Britain" title, though.
I visit the town regularly, usually to visit Barter Books (what used to be the old railway station), although I still haven't managed a look at the new Alnwick Garden yet. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I must admit, I tend to call everyone "mate"- I wouldn't call anyone a duck, though, unless they were a Donald or a Daisy |

Yeah, in my experience when someone calls you 'mate' they usually mean the exact opposite.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I find some parts of the north far from grim.
I was in Lancashire last year & some parts are lovely! Ramsbottom is gorgeous.. but we did stop off at one town that really WAS grim. Half the houses were boarded up, even the pubs were boarded up!
We found one shop open- a newsagent which had about four items in total in it, & took a walk round the block. At the railway station there was a sign of life- a Mini Austin exhebition.
We hopped back on a train after that, back to Ramsbottom.
I was surprised that nobody entreated us to buy gum! |

Cheshire is quite posh, isn't it?
As for the north-east, I visited Northumbria in the '80s. Very beautiful, but Newcastle Upon Tyne was weird! I went to a sparsley attended folk concert there, but saw hordes of local youths on the street at night- a huge gaggle of girls on one side of the street, jokingly exchanging insults with a huge gaggle of boys on the other. On a cold night, they all worse the skimpiest of clothing |

Nowt's really changed re the amount (or lack) of clothing worn by the younger thrill-seeking crowd that head for the Bigg Market or the Quayside on a weekend.... nor the exchanging of insults by the charvas and charva-resses that are at least anatomically inventive if not particularly erudite....
Don't just settle for visiting the 'Toon, though - visit Hadrian's Wall, the Northumbrian coastal castles and fishing villages, plus the Cheviot Hills. I consider myself fortunate to have all that lot on my doorstep. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I'm quite happy with my part of the world, just east of the main Hull to Brid road. The coast is only 10 miles away ( and getting nearer) _________________ Geddon

I did visit Hadrians' wall. Truly magnificent countryside around there. Berwick upon Tweed is qorgeous, too.
You must know Hexham? I visited there in the '70s- really nice.
Just a few miles to the south in County Durham, I have fond memories of Barnard Castle |

re: names
In scotland (well, glasgow at least) you get called 'pal' (even if they're not your pal which irritates me intensely) then there's 'hen' - which I hate as well (maybe like being called 'duck' - had never heard of that one before)
going to different towns you hear all the local equivalents - it's confussing but funny:
mate, hen, chuck, pal, sweetheart... etc _________________ I was trying to daydream, but my mind kept wandering. |
