I think the coming week could be Richard's last on BFBS Radio 2.
He's dropped a few comments to this effect.
Wonder what his future plans are. |

Maybe he is leaving radio? He seems to be replaced by Simon Mayo, Aled Jones, Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie as daytime cover on Radio 2. The only time you hear him now on Radio 2 is when Sarah Kennedy is unwell or on Bank Holidays. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

It's obviously too much to hope that he's coming back to R2.
(I'm enjoying listening to him this morning.... it's making me think it's Saturday afternoon from a few years back.) _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Interesting along with Richard's axing, a number of other presenters on BFBS Radio 2 are also leaving-before you ask I have had a note confirming this from one of the presenters on BFBS-not Richard I would hasten to add.
I wonder if Richard is going to reappear somewhere else soon. |

With me obviously not being a Richard Allinson fan... why has he been axed from BFBS Radio if he's as good as you believe him to be? _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Perhaps they are finding out that the cost of a DAB frequency means they have to cut back on presenters? _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I don't think BFBS R2 has a DAB frequency, I thought it was only R1?

You are correct Helen.
Interesting to see on another board that Richard's future plans have now been leaked to the Press.
I wonder where is he is going. |

I've just heard him say that as well on BFBS R2.
Puzzling, there is nothing on Media Guardian unless it's too early in the day?

It must be a small leak as Dig Spy, Media Guardian and Radio Today haven't got it, YET!!
I can't see Radio 2 either. Maybe BBC Local?
Obviously he's been offered work somewhere else. It's April where contract will be signed!!

Hey, guys.
Haven't been around these boards for a while. This is a real shame, I loved the Saturday show on Radio 2 -it ended and now here we go again.
I've really enjoyed listening to Richard on BFBS - it was a great show. I wish him all the best in any new venture and hope to hear him in a regular slot on BBC Radio 2.
Cheers, Rich - good work. _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

Maybe Rich was joking about the media leak?
Seems to me he doesn't need a leak as the message boards will continue with his name in lights until we are put straight. |

Richard was indeed joking about his whereabouts/media leak.
He confirmed to me yesterday that "it was a casual reference to the reasons Harry had to come back from Afghanistan".
Still no news though about his future plans. |

Richard Allinson has gone silent so has BFBS.
Tuesday 01 April 2008: The month long trail of broadcasting British Forces radio station BFBS on the Digital One national multiplex has come to an end, leaving the DAB slot silent.
The channel on DAB is now broadcasting 112kbps of stereo silence, but text information still displays BFBS Radio - Pop Music. No news news has been released regarding the results of the trail, and whether or not it was successful.
Also tonight, GCap Media's theJazz has fallen silent, as promised by GCap Media chief executive Fru Hazlitt during her short time in charge.

Lots of tumbleweed blowing across the DAB spectrum at the moment.

Not quite true!
Quote: | BFBS on DAB "not an option"
Tuesday, April 1 2008, 11:32 BST
By James Welsh, International Editor
BFBS has ended its digital radio trial after three months.
BFBS Radio, one of many British Forces Broadcasting Service offerings, joined national digital radio multiplex Digital One back in January. At the time, Digital One chief executive Quentin Howard said that if the trial proved "popular and successful" he "would hope to be able to make the service permanent".
Today, BFBS Radio called the trial "a huge success" but said that it, in conjunction with the Ministry of Defence, had decided "that making the service permanent is not an option at this point".
Research undertaken during the trial indicated that it had achieved listening figures of 863,000 people per week. 62% of people in BFBS' "core target" group, defined as service personnel and their families, "said they were extremely or very likely to listen in the future".
BFBS added that the decision not to put a permanent service on DAB was not a reflection on the platform's wider popularity. In a statement, the service said: "We proved during the trial that DAB Digital Radio is accessible and popular and provides a route to air for radio stations that provide unique content and can’t get onto FM nationally."
It is not known at this stage what the slot on Digital One will be used for. |

I notice Radio Times and BBC Radio Oxford still show Allinson's Albums in their weekend schedules. My old-fashioned VHF ears don't stretch that far - is he still there? _________________ Ron |

Jolly good. I have refrained from making comment on him til now but I do think it a shame that his face no longer seems to fit with those who sit in the ivory tower of Broadcasting House, after all he has done over the years, especially at short notice covering for all and sundry recently. Elsewhere I compared him with Simon Mayo, who has obviously expressed a desire to return to music radio. They are both highly accomplished broadcasters but neither has the fizz and pzazz (or the compulsion to shout all the time) that seems to be wanted by some today, and I think it may have been a case of there not being room for both of them (pure conjecture, of course).
There are worse places to lie low for a bit than Radio Oxford, of course. Bob Harris spent a good part of the 80s there in his "wilderness years" after OGWT, so there may be hope yet! _________________ Ron |

Hi Ron,
Can't agree more with what you've said. I'll have to get back into the habit of listening to Radio Oxford again, it's not a bad station.
I used to leave it on after Richard's Sunday show for Gillham's Gold and he plays some goodies. He is on Radio Devon earlier but it's a different show.

Lets not be all doom and gloom about Richard.
I'm sure Richard whilst taking a well earned break is considering his options carefully and will return to mainstream radio soon with a regular show.
Clearly Radio 2 is not going to be his future home-their loss but we still have Allinsons Albums to look forward to each and every Saturday afternoon on BBC Radio Oxford/York.
Whilst writing I must say imho Radio 2 is in terminal decline-The Douglas woman has lost the plot-I hardly listen to anything on Radio 2 any longer-I can't wait for it all to be completely changed-both the day and weekend schedules. |

Fred-The same show goes out of both Radio Oxford and Radio York but it's just staggered to go out at different times.
Richard pre-records it at the Radio Oxford studios. |
