The Telegraph's pop music journalist cum critic, Neil McCormick, has caused something of a stir by sailing against the wind and posting an article about the absurdity of the group's music, lyrics, looks, show, the lot.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2008/08/05/bmabba105.xml
Such has been the reaction that he has been forced to issue a defence, by way of a blog - http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/neil_mccormick/blog/2008/08/05/abba_its_war
I have to say I agree with everything he says, but I still love their records as pure pop entertainment. I've mentioned before that the West End show is pretty feeble, both in terms of story and solo performances, but people go to the theatre to enjoy and be entertained, and you cannot fail to get up on your feet and join in when it gets to the chorus bits. Haven't seen the film yet.
As well as the "Abba Gold" CD which has returned to the No 1 spot in the chart after 16 years, all the original albums have been remastered. They have been out for some time, and both HMV and Fopp have them going cheap - in the latter's case at £3 a go. Like the Beatles, even most of their album tracks were catchy tunes, and they are well worth it. _________________ Ron |

Having read his blog entry and the bit about his sister playing her Abba albums to the point of driving him to distraction, I suppose I can understand it if he never wants to hear another Abba record again. It's a bit like radio stations overplaying some records on their playlists till you're sick of them by the time they are on general sale. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I enjoyed some of ABBA's music, but when performed badly by those who can't sing Mamma Mia! Give me a break! _________________ Geddon

JW played Dancing Queen from the film soundtrack this morning. It makes the original (which I know is 32 years old) sound like an out-of-tune funeral dirge. _________________ Ron |

I saw the movie of Mamma Mia at a time when I wasn't in the right mood for it. The overall feeling was of an extended version of one of those old Crackerjack mini-musicals where they shoehorn chart songs into the action - I was expecting Michael Aspel or Ed Stewart to turn up as the girl's real dad! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!
