Heard this sad news in bed last night.
He was a truly wonderful actor....what a voice....one of our best.
His performance in The Elephant Man was an astonishing one to witness.

He was everything you say, Becky.
I well remember when The Naked Civil Servant was first shown. I don't remember seeing anything of John's before that - though I know his portrayal of Timothy Evans predates it, but I had yet to see it at the time.
Fair to say, his Quentin Crisp was something wonderful to behold. As was his John Merrick, Max in Midinght Express, Caligula in I Claudius and so many more roles.
A nice obit in the Guardian today...he will be very sadly missed.

He led a colourful life combined with a very successful career. Sad to read he was sexually abused as a child. Perhaps that accounted for his excessive drinking.
That obituary was an interesting read,Raver. Thanks for posting it. |
