Dave Brubeck died this morning, aged 91. Performing musician for over 60 years. Married 70 years
He and Paul Desmond created a unique sound in the late 50s early 60's, very much a timeless sound, never to become corny like some other jazz genres, and their 'Time Out' captured a whole generation at the time and still gets the ear of youngsters today. _________________ -

I'm not a great fan of Jazz but from the very limited amount I know about the genre I think the man did a lot in the fifties and early sixties to drag Jazz into the modern age - and I do really love that wonderful track 'Take Five'
When my younger son was first learning to play the electric guitar that was one of the first tracks he ever played - and although it might seem strange it actually lends itself quite well to the guitar which goes to show what a superb musical piece it is _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I watched an Arena profile ..In His Own Sweet Way... a while back, about him, that co-incided with his 90th birthday.....there are clips from it here http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00cgg6f
Like you, ruddles, I am not the biggest fan of jazz but I love some of his music...I always assumed he'd composed Take Five until I watched that programme.
Sad he didn't make it for his 92nd birthday ...he died just one day short of it ... a birthday party had been planned for him with family and famous guests. It has been recast as a memorial tribute.. .
Herbie Hancock was very warm in his praise for him last night on Radio 5 Live

Jamie Cullum is doing a special for DB next Tuesday 7 p.m. on R2 - hopefully it will do the legend justice - I saw him at the Barbican in the 90's - phenomenal. _________________ Standing on Ray Moore's shoulders |

I am a jazz-lover as long as it's not too way out and I have always enjoyed some of his music but not all. I went to see him in concert when he was touring over here about 4 or 5 years ago and it was mostly very enjoyable.
Thanks Childprufe for flagging up the Cullum programme which I rarely listen to as he was such a comedown after wonderful Humph. |
