The text mentions a communication test but I'd have thought it would be a strict requirement that the driver should be able to speak good English?
Hardly ever using Taxis or not living in a large city etc, I don't know how big the problem is.. is this another case of UK citizens not wanting these jobs? _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Of course a Taxi driver in the UK should be able to speak understand English. The proper London Taxi (Black Cabs) drivers all do, & they know how to get from A to B.
Not true for all mini cab drivers!
I once ordered a mini cab to take me from Sydenham in South east London to Wimbledon in South West London. When the driver arrived his command of english was not too good. When i asked him to take me to Wimbledon, he asked me for directions!
I then said drive to Clapham Junction & I'll direct you from there! He didn't even know the way to Clapham Junction!!
I told him to phone his office, he said, "no, no, no phone!"
I then told him I don't drive so don't know the short cut, but I'd direct him how to get to Wimbledon.
I had to direct him each step of the way.
To make matters worse, when we finally got to my address, i gave him the sum I had agreed with his office.
"He said, "no no, is not enough. Take me a long time".
I told him it only took him a long time because he didn't know his job.
He said "I phone my office".
I left him gabbling & shouting after me "you need pay more". The liberty!!! |

I got a shared cab thing in NYC some years ago. The gal who shared the cab with me reminded me of the girl in Odyseys Native New Yorker. Very outgoing
I have heard some stories about NYC cab rides..... |
