One of Ireland's best-loved singer-songwriters died yesterday from an illness believed to be linked to his years working on Britain's building sites.
Christie Hennessy, 62, died in a London hospice this morning from asbestosis, according to his manager Fran Cotton.
The Kerry-born artist wrote some of Ireland`s best-known folk songs for high-profile musicians such as Christy Moore. The late music critic John Peel was among his fans and brought him to wider attention outside Ireland.
A statement on the singer`s website said: "It is with great sadness that we announce that Christie passed away this morning.
"We just want you all to know how much Christie appreciated your love and support over the years.
"He will be sadly missed by all."

In 2001 Christie contributed to a UK no 1 single. The line "while we're singing Don't Forget Your Shovel if you want to go to work" from Nizlopi's "JCB Song" is a reference to one of his most famous songs which was recorded by Christy Moore. |
