And the winner is......Radcliffe and Maconie into The Organist Entertains last night!
Now, I like both shows - I'm probably one of the few who does - but by gum, the switch from a live session from Ghosts to Nigel Ogden talking about the joys of Christie organs was an awkward one....even one of the e-mailers to R&M made that point.
R2 may be desperate to kill off The Organist Entertains, but can't they at least let it live out its declining years on a Sunday when people who might actually appreciate it will be listening, and it won't sound so out of place in the line-up?
Plus I might be able to hear it a bit more often on a Sunday as well! _________________ "....you're wearing a plywood bow tie with Dundee United on it?" |

Yes, the new evening schedule is a mess. I don't think the 7pm shows are quite right, and Stuart & Mark should be on later. I find that after a long day at work, and doing stuff around the house, I haven't got the concentration for the documentaries and specialist shows - as much as I want to listen. |

Well, I wouldn't say I was a fan but I certainly listened to the show a couple of times each month in its previous slot. I'm not prepared to stay up beyond 2200 especially to listen to it now, though. As Ian says, I'm also too frazzled to devote much attention to post-2200 documentaries either, and don't have the time to fit much else into my Listen Again schedule, so they get missed out on.
Mark and Stuart offer a light-hearted couple of hours that doesn't require much in the way of brain power to listen to - why can't it start at 2100 or 2200?
And Simon, I also heard the reference to Nigel Ogden in last night's programme.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Crunching gear changes within the M&S show itself last night.
From the delicate Jo Manga to punky Cribs to poppy Joe Jackson.
Lots of err...errr...errr sounds in between of course _________________ Ron |

The M & S show is the wrong show on the wrong station at the wrong time. It should be on Local Radio after midnight on a Saturday. |

Yes, when you get listeners pointing out the discrepancy on air, it just shows how poorly thought out the evening schedule is - the typical R&M listener will not want to listen to Nigel Ogden, nor will the typical Nigel Ogden listener want to listen to R&M......it seems to me to be fairly obvious, but it doesn't seem to have occured to R2 management.
At the risk of sounding like a fantasy scheduler, it would surely make more sense to shave half an hour of Tichmarsh (Melodies For You has always been too long at two hours anyway) and put Nigel on before Sunday Half Hour. The present arrangement suits nobody.
I agree that R&M should really be on from 10pm, but maybe I'm just nostalgic for Radcliffe's old Radio 1 show, which I used to like a lot. _________________ "....you're wearing a plywood bow tie with Dundee United on it?" |

Simon et al,
I don't see a problem with 'crunching gear changes' in radio schedules. They have always been there. Years ago R2 had sport programmes and R3 had cookery and gardening shows. People THEN did not complain. They just knew when to switch their radios on and off. Simple.
These days I switch on R2 on Tuesday for Desmond Carrington. I don't listen before or after. It's not a problem.
The R3 schedule becomes very non-classical at times late evening with The Essay, Late Junction and Andy Kershaw. People just switch OFF. Simple.
These whingeing R&M listeners I regard as lazy and selfish
The Sunday schedule is a day-long nostalgia trip for music 1920-1980 and a bit of 18th/19thC classical thrown in too, but not everyone can listen on Sunday so I'm supportive of retaining specialist shows at 7pm or 10pm midweek too.
