I hope David Jensen gets a good gig somewhere. He's wasted on something as saccharine as Smooth. It's awful - even worse than a lot of Radio 2's output, and that's saying something!

I wondered why Gary King was doing the lunchtime show yesterday.

I sometimes switch over from R2!

Very good broadcaster. He also does a show on Sundays and has been covering Saturday mornings for David Prever recently. I guess he might take over from Pat?

Yes I think Gary King is a really competent broadcaster

Very sad about David Jensen but I think the writing was on the wall when they ended his Double Top Twenty Show on Sunday evenings - one of the best music shows on radio IMHO Sad

I listen to Smooth far less than I used to - even the Breakfast Show for me has lost its sparkle despite the best efforts of Simon Bates to appear interested - I reckon he's not happy himself about the recent changes - and whilst on the subject why has the Golden Hour turned into tracks from only a single year rather than two separate years as was the original and traditional formula - don't tell me - so they can fit in more annoying adverts Evil or Very Mad

Smooth (and all the other formulaic stations owned by media "brands") allows no space for individuality. The server-based play out system says: "This will be the next track you play" and afterwards it says "Speak now for 20 seconds".

That's why I listen to Radio Caroline online. Music radio in the UK is dead and buried!

I don't know what circumtances why Pat and David have left the station. It does seem strange. I'm sure they will bounce back. I like to see Our Tune return, but will Global want that? I hope we don't see more casualties.

End contract term? Budget cuts? New programme manager wants new blood? It could be any reason.

I would expect Global carried though all their contract from GMG. So might have left early or they had run out. We never know.

I think stations like that will do away with human presenters altogether and rely on system-generated voices in the near future. The technology is getting much better and soon most sucker listeners won't be able to tell the difference. It'll be a helluva lot cheaper, that's for sure, and the links will convey the precise information (and nothing more) as required by the music companies!

Quite where OfCom is these days is anybody's guess.

Some interesting tweets from Tony Blackburn this afternoon regarding this.

Sorry to hear my old friend's Pat Sharp and David Jensen are no longer with Smooth Radio. The problem is they have a personality !!

I think it's tragic that broadcasters with personality on these stations are unable to be entertaining, thank The Lord we have the BBC

If I want 28 songs in a row I have them all on my IPad, when I listen to the radio I like someone to play great songs but also talk to me

Smooth now plays three songs then a commercial break, then another three songs and a commercial break 24-7 I find this let's say very bland.

I don't understand why he's having a dig a Smooth as he works in the industry. BBC do work closely with commercial radio these days and sometimes let there employees work between eachother.

I think the fact that he's having a dig is good - and quite brave. What he's doing is reflecting a widespread discontent within the industry regarding radio programming and presentation by automatons. The big networks (the few national brands who've destroyed independent commercial radio in the UK) have only the bottom line to concern them - an quality radio is just not important any more.

What's worse is that politicians have removed the teeth of regulators to the point where OfCom is a complete waste of space in the broadcasting arena.

Good for Tony Blackburn to tweet his true feelings. He speaks for many other people for whom it's too much of a risk to do the same.

That isn't the case, Mark. It's not the BBC working with commercial stations at all (it's a cut-throat market these days) but more the simple fact that presentation staff are working on shorter and shorter contracts at lower prices, and the BBC isn't prepared to pay for exclusivity so presenters can work for whoever they like when the opportunity arises.

The whole of the broadcasting industry is now working on freelance contracts - everyone from talent to production staff and technical staff. I have friends who are former BBC employees (of many years' standing) who are now all freelance, not buy choice, and will work for one network at one studio centre in the afternoon and with another network/studio in the evening.

A good friend of mine is a freelance TV cameraman who used to be a BBC staffer and based at TV centre who recently worked for three broadcast companies in a single 12-hour day!

That's the world we live in - and why radio presenters move around networks so often.

I predict Lynn Parsons will be the next to leave as she has a serious personality-strangely which comes across on her show on Smooth but not really when she does the Radio 2 stuff Confused

He has every right to say what he thinks IMO and he makes some very fair points.
That said Radio 2 itself is rather bland and repetitive during the daytime & early evening.

I wonder if she could return to Radio 2 if that does happen as she was very comfortable in the Anneka Rice / Zoe Ball slot and early breakfast?

I do respect Tony and like him very much. I was quite surprised with his comments. He does have the right to open up his heart about the radio in general, as he does have friends working in the industry. Radio has had some big changes over the years from the days when he started out to make the industry sound fresher and commercial radio a little more cost effective to run by merging them into one big operation like Global and Bauer. I'm sure with Bauer taking over Absolute maybe he might take the foot of the gas with his comments as he does work for Magic.

I think the basis of his comments are that he, like many others in the industry, are just fed up with way radio is now dominated by a few "brands" who treat licences like McDonalds franchises. There's not an ounce of originality among any of them, and that's what Blackburn is really criticising. Rightly so. I think the problem is that broadcasting is now run by people who don't have much interest in either radio or TV, only money.

Don't forget that Blackburn cut his broadcasting teeth on the UK's first pirate radio station - Radio Caroline - after which he jumped ship (literally) to Big L Radio London. Those were the days of really innovative radio, the likes of which we don't hear these days on the main networks.

I'm just glad Radio Caroline is still there doing its thing much better than most others - playing a really good and diverse spread of music and presented by people who know what they're talking about. I can't imagine what would happen to it if the likes Boring Bauer took it over (not that Ronan O'Rahilly would ever allow it).

Now Daryl Denham has left the station. He presented weekend breakfast. Former LBC Presenter Anthony Davis recently took over drivetime.

Quote:
Another Smooth Radio presenter has left the station this week, following Pat Sharp and Kid Jensen’s sudden exit before Christmas.

Daryl Denham, who has been on weekend breakfast since Pat Sharp moved to weekdays a year ago, has already hosted his final show and been removed from the station’s website.

A Smooth Radio spokesperson told RadioToday: “We can confirm that Daryl Denham has left Smooth Radio – we’d like to thank him for his hard work on the station and wish him all the best for the future.”

From this weekend, the Saturday breakfast show will be presented by Emma B, in addition to her Sunday afternoon programme, while Gold’s Eamonn Kelly will be hosting the Sunday breakfast show. Eamonn previously hosted breakfast on Smooth Radio East Midlands before it went national in 2010.

Smooth Radio has recently came under the full control of Global Radio and is expected to re-launch later this year.
