I've been keeping an eye on this Pigeon nest for weeks now as the mother decided to build the nest right next to a drainage hole on this second floor balcony so I have to regularly check that the hole is clear.. otherwise I'll have a very wet bedroom below! Laughing you can just make out the hole to the left..
When I checked this morning, this is what I found...

I was tempted to "modify" her nest as, when it rains, she's deluged from rainwater running off the tile but as you can see, one of her eggs has hatched so probably best to leave her alone..
Ugly little gits when they're just born aren't they? Shocked

Mother keeps a close eye on me whenever I venture out...

Still, at least they both have a nice view!
See! we have Palm tree type thingys on the Norfolk coast too! Laughing

Fantastic pics SF! Your residents have superb views.

We had 5 woodpigeons in the garden the other day, and some are clearly 'courting' on the opposite rooftop!

They're ugly gits at any time!

We have at least three fat woodpigeons. The live in the oak tree, along with the squirrels, and they'll "do it" anywhere.

A beautiful, balmy day on the east coast! That palm must be hardy, though.

What a lovely view. We have a view over an expanse of water too - the Grand Union Canal!!!

It's during summers like this that I really do miss living in Devon. We're about as far as we can be from the coast here.

BTW - woodpigeons: shoot the buggers!

We have moorhens and ducks at it all night on the canal outside and they're bad enough.....

Cool beans! Baby Pigeons look a lot like a three-day old vasectomy.

Thanks for the replies.. Razz yes, I feel very lucky indeed to live where we are.
I've always lived right next to the sea so I think I'd find it difficult to live inland now!.. particularly on very hot days which I'm not keen on at all.
Luckily, our house is such that we usually have a cool breeze running through it.
I can normally hear the waves breaking on the beach too, especially during the winter so I'd miss that also.

I don't know what the plants are Ron, but the garden people have planted quite a few in the beds here and they all seem to be doing really well and look good all year round.

That third picture shows a few things which annoy me nearly every time I look at it.. Laughing if you look just beyond the railing you'll see the gap in the hedge.
1. The Highways Dept. placed a white line on the road to stop cars parking in front of the gap and dropped kerb.. but it's too far to the right!

2. So they then painted the double yellow lines to the incorrect white line.

3. They formed a raised kerb at the Bus Stop.

4. They then painted a new Bus Stop bay ( lettering is terrible ) which doesn't line up with the raised kerb!

Why??

Bit of a disaster today.. we had torrential rain over lunchtime which had me flitting around the place making sure everything was ok plus, rescuing my Newf who was outside and soaked through!

Finally I remembered the baby Pigeon and rushed upstairs to find it alone and swamped, barely alive.. poor little thing.
I brought her/him indoors and it was so cold I thought it would be a goner for sure. Sad

I placed it in a towel nest and left it for about an hour suspended within a circular heated towel radiator in the bathroom.
To my amazement, even after that horrible gasping motion that dying things do.. it seems ok! it spent a couple of hours in doors wrapped up in the towel whilst I fabricated a quick lead "roof" over the nest to provide cover from the rain.

I just checked it again and although the outside temp is cool, she/he is lovely and warm to the touch so I think I'll risk leaving it out tonight.

I just hope mum will return, despite the new roof! Rolling Eyes

When we lived in Jo'burg we woke up one extremely frosty June morning (yes!) to find a pigeon just lying in the swimming pool, still upright, bit like a duck. We rescued it with a long pool brush and I took it indoors and gave it some warm milk and bread and put it on a cushion in the dining room where there was a patch of sunlight on the floor.

Later that afternoon it seemed a bit stronger, and I took it for a walk before settling it down in one of the outhouses with food, water and a bed. When I checked on it before going to bed that night it was sitting in the corner with its back to the room.

When I got up next morning, it had died. I was really upset, I thought it was going to pull through. But perhaps it was its time anyway. Poor thing. I buried it with a few tears.

And then one of the dogs dug it up again. Shocked

Having been on the receiving end of one of them (vasectomy not baby pigeon) I can only assume that my surgeon was rather more skilled! Wink

On 'Two & A Half Men' one week, Evelyn, Jake's grandma, had him over to visit. She was trying to tempt him with extravagant dishes, one of which was squab.

Jake kept repeating 'squab, squab, squab' at her. I didn't find out till later that it was young pigeon. My sister thought it was a type of squid!

I had to check out "Squab" as a dish and was relieved to find it actually contains Lamb and not baby Pigeons! Laughing on the other hand, I feel sorry for the Lambs too!! Confused

Final update on the baby Pigeon by the way... I decided that, after an amazing recovery, I'd place him/her back in the nest with suitable rain protection this time. After numerous peerings out from the window, I wasn't convinced the mum was feeding it.
A quick call to the local vet had me driving to a nearby town and a lovely couple who were willing to take over resonsibility as I'm up to my ears in work! not only that, I couldn't get the baby to eat anything.. it's really difficult!
Lovely people, lovely house, lovely Deer... Shocked yes, as I was standing in their kitchen admiring a beautiful baby Crow, a brown thing skitted past..
I was amazed! a perfect little Deer stood in the kitchen awaiting a pat on the head.. "oh yes", he said, " So an so has been with us a few years now, we have Foxes too!" Shocked Shocked a quick call to the garden had two fabulous Foxes scamper in to the house, one of which jumped on the couch and laid out like a family dog.
I'd never seen anything like it and couldn't stop smiling! Laughing
It's good to know there are such people about.

What a lovely ending to your pigeon's story SF. I'm sure it will thrive in it's new home.
