Terry Wogan extended his ratings lead over breakfast rival Chris Moyles but could not stop BBC Radio 2 slipping to its lowest share of the audience for nearly three years.

Yes, he's hanging on by his fingernails, that's what he's doing. All I heard him doing this morning (for the 10 minutes I could bear before switching off) was wittering on as usual, reading even more silly limericks from the same few pseudonymed correspondents and playing the same old music.
Hmmm. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Yes that's right, Wogan only has the best part of 8 million listeners, he's definitely hanging on by his fingernails... _________________ MiS |

Im not surpised Radio 2 is slipping down the ratings, Wogan is awful, talks in riddles, Ken Bruce is fine but dont listen when he isnt on. Jeremy Vine doesnt have an opinion on whats been discussed and seems more interested in cutting people off who have been holding on the phones for ages to play a record. As for the 2 to 7pm schedule, well totally utter dross |

Radio 2 will slip occasionally when changes happen. I'm sure once those changes have settled in they may have a lift? I can't see how ratings will keep Wogan? I think it's just he enjoys the job? Hey you can't last forever. There must be a point where he will want some time to enjoy away from getting up and driving miles to London every morning he's on duty. |

Talking about wittering on I had the misfortune of catching Sarah Kennedy whilst we were driving into London this morning..
She is an utterly hopeless presenter-did anyone hear her wittering on (or was she taking the piss?) about blind people having access to computers. |

This REALLY ANNOYS me.
Why does Wogan have a car to drive him into work. I guess the car takes him home again after his show.
Who is paying for this? -us taxpayers
Why can't Wogan take public transport or drive own car into work like the rest of us.
Indeed the exercise might do him good. |

It could well be in his contract but in anycase how do you know that he doesn't pay it himself? It's not much different from using a taxi.
When I worked shifts I was entitled to either a taxi or petrol allowance as there was no public transport to where I was working for the early starts.

Is it any wonder the audience numbers are slipping? I don't listen to anything like as much as I used to before all these 'personalities' arrived.

Am I the only one who quite likes the presenters but think it's the repetitve playlists that are making people turn away from Radio 2?
I had to go into work today from 9 o'clock (supposed to be on holiday) and there was virtually NOTHING played that I would personally listen to until The Tracks Of My Years came on.
It used to be sooo different in previous years |

Partly correct, he does have a driver but I don't think the BBC 'send it for him'
Anyway what does it matter, nothing is going to change, there will still be the same old emails about Wales, Pinot Grigo, Glasgow Rangers and other such things from the same old contributors until the earth stops spinning so we might as well save our breath moaning as listen to something else. |

This is unfortunately quite true. There's only so many James Morrison sound a likes you can take. Thing is, I'll probably never drag myself away from Wogan as it's just an easy company to the morning.
For good music - by which I mean my kind of music, of course - 6Music is definitely the place to be. Though Radcliffe, Maconie, Long and Harris (and some others) do their best to keep 'good music' on the station. |

I'm glad I didn't hear that or my radio might have been damaged in a fit of rage. I assume (but correct me if I'm on the wrong track) that she was perhaps questioning how blind people can use computers? If so, the woman really is a bloody idiot. I've worked to develop systems that aid the use, by people with a range of disabilities, to use computing systems and with the right support blind people can use today's computing software and hardware without many problems.
Her ignorance and sheer bigotry makes me so angry. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

I agree too. But I wonder if the BBC bosses will realise the declining audience share is because of the music, not the lack of 'star' presenters. |

If you read my post again you'll see that I did include the caveat that I didn't hear the reference but doubtless those who did would correct me if I had assumed wrongly.
That seems fair enough to me.
MadeinSurrey wrote: | If you got off your high horse for one second, you might come to the conclusion that you don't actually know everything. |
That's irrelevant. If SK indeed inferred what's been suggested above (and I'm still waiting for somebody to tell me I've arrived at the wrong conclusion), then it's perfectly reasonable for me to stand up for people who have sight impairments whether you approve or not.
If SK did indeed say, or imply, what I've understood to have been said or implied then she's a fool. Period. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

My understanding is that the provision of a BBC car and driver to and from work is part of Wogan's contract, though I could be mistaken. The benefit to Wogan is obvious - he can fall out of bed into the car (via the wardrobe!) without having to wake up fully - he can do this during the drive. If I were Sir Tel, I would value every minute of sleep in the morning, too.
The benefit to the BBC is that if Wogan misses his alarm, then the driver knocking at the door will still get him to work in time for his programme.
There is no reason why contracts shouldn't include provisions like this. The BBC has a fleet of cars and drivers they use for ferrying people around (usually guests on programmes) and can provide the facility for Terry more cheaply than he could for himself. The BBC know what this costs and I'm sure they add the cost to the cash payment they make for Wogan's services when deciding the value of the presenter. If he's worth, say, £750,000, why shouldn't he take some of that in the form of a lift to work??

Colby, I have to side with MIS on this occaion. It would be much fairer if you listened to what SK said, I know she can be difficult to listen to, but at least try and get the gist of what she said and then comment. There can be no real argument then, just discussion.

We should be jolly pleased that Wogan gets a lift to work each day. Most days he doesn't know which way is up, so for him to drive in would be highly dangerous to the public. The reason why he's been at Radio 2 for so long is, we know where he is; imagine the panic that would ensue on the roads, if Wogan was released into the community. |

I stand by what I wrote. If she said what is implied, then I'm totally justified in writing my comments. If she didn't, then I'll withdraw my comments. Can't be fairer than that can I?
However, ANYBODY who calls into question a blind person's ability to "use a computer" simply because of their visual impairment is grossly insulting all blind people, and I'll call such persons "an idiot" without hesitation. And that applies to SK - if, indeed, that's what she said.
I notice that nobody has yet claimed that she did no such thing. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Yes you can, use iplayer to listen to what she said then report back for discussion.
Colby we've had similar postings slagging of Evans and Sunday programmes without the posters watching them, and that's not what this forum is about.

No thanks, John. I'm not a glutton for punishment. And I don't need to, because my comments were conditional, hence the caveat. I think, therefore, they were totally reasonable.

Colby, if you could just occasionally temper your comments to reflect that, actually, the rest of us sometimes have a differing point of view to you, and that this is acceptable, we would all be a lot happier. As it is, your posts just come across as lectures that put people off from joining the debate. Thanks. _________________ MiS |

I don't see what the fuss is about. I said that if she said such a thing about people with a given disability then she was an idiot - the operative words being "if" and "then".
I would say that of anyone who made such a silly statement. I'm not "lecturing" anyone, I'm just reflecting what I consider to be a reasonable view and a view held - no doubt - by any fair-minded person. The fact that such a remark (even though implied) is attributed to Ms. Kennedy doesn't surprise me at all given the kind of statements she's known to make from time to time.
So - once again - I stand by my comments. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

I haven't missed the point at all, and I think the point that I have made is quite a reasonable one. Those sight-imparied, computer-using, people I've helped in the past would no doubt agree with me too. And I'm not hectoring, either; if people are impervious to the simple point I'm making (out of a desire to protect a bigot) then hard luck.

Thank you most kindly.
All I've done its to argue in support of people who are - one can safely assume - are being ridiculed by a person in a position of privilege. Mark M. is agreement with that, too.
For my part, it has nothing to do with "always being right" or "having the last word". However, now you come to mention I'll make this the last word. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Oh well, if Mark M, agrees. you must be right. By the way, there was absolutely no element of ridicule in what Sarah said - quite the opposite . But you wouldn't know that, because you didn't hear the show. Doesn't stop you from giving us the benefit of your opinion though does it? _________________ MiS |

I'm just reminding the others, Mark, of your post because they seem to have forgotten what prompted my wholly justified comments - based on the "if indeed she was taking the p, then............ she's an idiot" principle.
