Thanks, John. Yes, I'm just about recovered, going back to work on Tuesday and back on my show on Tynedale FM on Thursday.

On the Benny Hill track 'What A World', I noticed the 'put out your pudding for treacle' bit as he reworked that for the St. John Bossum sketch on that 1971 album!
I thought Tony Hatch's 'Beautiful In The Rain' was going to be Harry Nilsson's 'One'. The intro is very similar. _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Splendid as ever on Sat. Good to hear one of the Shadows' few vocal tracks, Don't Make My Baby Blue. What a pity they didn't do more songs.

Iwarburton, I'm more familiar with Don't Make My Baby Blue as a track covered on The Move's album Shazam.
But the Shadows did a good version of it. _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

At long last it looks like the end of Brian Matthews and SOTS in the regular 8-10am Saturday slot.
The New Controller is starting to put his stamp on the Radio 2 schedules. |

Really? I'd love to know how you arrive at that conclusion.

He has a great show, in a great slot, and it will be a sad day if it goes.
We don't need a breakfast show or similar on Saturdays, this show is agood escape from that format done on many other stations. |

Should have added that this is no reflection against Zoe Ball, who did a good job of standing in for Ken Bruce recently. But can't we relative oldies have one morning a week with our kind of repertoire brought to us by our kind of presenter? Maybe we can--here's hoping our old mate BM can stay with us for a long time yet.

Iain Smith is posting the same rubbish on Smeggys and I am busy putting him down on there.I said I would never join that board I know but certain things prompted me to do it,I shall post there pretty infrequently though and my opinions and stands will not change!
meanwhile, well done our Helen on getting your 3 in a row chosen on SOTS this morning! Maybe it will be my turn soon!

It's another messageboard, one which we were all directed to off the POV boards when they made the ridiculous decision to close the radio board down.

The Nick Drake track, River Man, was new to me but isn't it gorgeous? Any info available?
Otherwise, no special favourites of mine today (I Go to Sleep is a near miss) but still a pretty good way of waking up on a Saturday.

I seem to remember somewhere in the Brand/Ross mess Gambo saying that Brian Matthew and SOTS gets the largest audience share of all the Radio 2 output, even if it doesn't get the largest absolute audience.
It would be a daft controller that meddled with his most successful programme, though clearly he should be considering what to do if the presenter became unavailable, as he should for all of his programmes.

I was listening to Nick Drake back in the early 70s when he was largely ignored. I'm amazed at how much his stuff gets played these days after all this time - and also that it's people in their 20s who have so much respect for him. That's nice.
All of his work is wonderful and a perfect antidote to so much mainstream rubbish that was the product of the 70s. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

My Saturday lie-in means that I don't listen to SOTS until at least Saturday afternoon or perhaps even Monday mornings while I'm working. It's something of an oasis in a desert of radio banality, it has to be said!
I tend to savour each show whilst it's still on air, because one just never knows.......... _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Hi everyone
Thanks to you all for commenting on this! I was just back from 2 weeks away on hols on Friday night and going through emails etc and found the link just in time to quickly find the section in the show and listen! I'd completely forgotten about sending in the email so a huge surprise. Glad you liked the tracks as well Becky!
I'm still having massive computer problems and using my husband's old work laptop just now. Other one might be fixed by Christmas if I'm lucky .
Thanks again for the heads up, and it's nice to have been missed.

We did thanks and got to St Pete beach and Fort Lauderdale Florida then Grapevine Texas with a side trip to Austin. South By South West music festival must be awsome when it's there. Hotel concierge was well impressed that I knew of it when I asked where it was held!
Missing the warmth since we got back I can tell you!

Today's show is in its latter stages as I type--well up to standard. Am currently enjoying Three in a Row.
Good, if accidental, timing for the Beatles' Taxman, as I've just been struggling with all the info that HMRC require from employers at this time of year!

Was the reference to 'Freddy' in Gary U.S. Bonds's 'Copycat' a reference to Freddy Cannon?
Someone should do a remake of this about the production line of wannabe Amy Winehouses (e.g. Adele, Duffy, Gabriella Cilmi)! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!
