Mark O-Interesting contrast between Richard's shows for BBC Radio 2 and BFBS Radio 2.
For the former Richard plays it very safe-records from the playlist, nothing controversial,l ight banter with the traffic girl, commenting on topical issues of the day whereas for BFBS Radio 2 his shows are much harder edge, pacy, more controversial with the music selection and are ALL about the music.
I applaud Richard for the diverse style/flexibilty he is able to bring to both stations but overall prefer the format he works with for BFBS Radio 2.
What is interesting though is I wonder if Richard has been asked to test out the format of his BFBS daily show on his new show on BBC Radio Oxford "Allinsons Albums" on Saturdays which will have a bigger/wider audience. If the reaction is positive I wonder if he will then be asked to bring it to Radio 2. Maybe this is his route back to a permanent show on Radio 2 in the future. I do hope so.
Richard Allinson rocks. |

Mark,
I hope so 'cos Allinson's Albums is a great show, nice to hear different tracks and music instead of the same old, same old - yes, he's playing Fleetwood Mac - Rumours but it is a great, classic album.
I noticed the jingles, too - "Go...Richard Allinson".

Hi Andy-I had to leave for football before Richard's show ended today.
Did he say he would be back next week-same time, same place etc or is it all over as Mark O seems to think.
Hopefully "Allinsons Albums" is here to stay because as you quite rightly say Richard plays some fantastic music on this show.
PS-Still can't find a Listen Again feature for the show though on Radio Oxford. Perhaps the IT department is on holiday! |

Maybe his main contract is with Radio 2 and farmed out to Oxford? He would have to at least host one show a week on Oxford, and as he's covering breakfast on 2 new years day, Oxford would have to work around him and take new years eve off? |

Hi Mark O-I have a feeling we will hear more of Richard Allinson on Radio 2 over the coming months.

Mark,
No, he didn't indicate he was back next week he just said the Oxford schedules were all over the place!
I think these 2 shows may be it as the Oxford Christmas trailer said 'Special shows from Richard Allinson'.
Hope this is a forerunner for a new R2 show, saying that I would listen whichever station it was on. _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

Maybe LD has realised her folly in creating a 'celebrity led Saturday' (morning, afternoon and evening) and is going to ditch one of them.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Maybe LD has also being doing her sums. It looks as though the government are going to squeeze the BBC's budget for the next few years. If this is the case she might suddenly have realised "we cannot afford all these celeb types and their over inflated pay demands for Radio 2"
Just a thought. If the penny drops then she might realise that she has great talent waiting in the wings/on the bench who she can already call upon eg Richard Allinson. |

If recent events are anything to go by, the BBC in general has sold off or 'outsourced' its requirements to make savings so it can continue to pay its current crop of celebs their inflated retainers. I can't really see this situation changing very much in future, however, especially now as the digital revolution is well under way. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

It certainly went for the cheap option this Christmas / New Year on radio 2 and apart from a few 'specials', including a recorded Christmas Day Wogan, simply filled the rest with repeats and the B-list presenters. The peak of them is tomorrow.
Why do they pay the regular presenters huge £100,000's and then give them ALL so much time off during the Bank holiday periods when we want something good to listen to ?

Couldn't agree more that this past week hasn't been a great listening event.
When will they learn that people do like a bit of normality over a holiday? A few specials yes, but last week was a bit too far. The weekends were the worst in my opinion.

I wonder if today's Ken Bruce is live. If you click the webcam link on Terry Wogan's page (under his piccy) you see an empty studio! |

I did think it rather odd him coming in New Years day when he's off the rest of the week. The hour of Philadelphia also seems a bit odd for a live show. |

I wasn't listening that closely to decide if the first hour to see if it was live or not. The Philly hour could be pre recorded and the rest live, I'm sure the Critical list on Stuart's Saturday show is/was.
It's sounding good, I think the Total Recorder will be dragged into operation for listening again.....

PS Nod
Did you hear Ken say that the OJays were originally called the Tymes and changed the name in 1963? I wondered if they were the same group who recorded "So In Love" in that year, that Art Garfunkel covered many, many years later.

Richard wasi n fine form today 1st January 2007 -he played some great music.
Sadly I had to turn off at 10am when Ken Bruce came on-thankfully he is away for the rest of the week.
Richard's final show is tomorrow 2nd January-sadly he is only on for 2 hours.
His stint over the Xmas break has been excellent-a top profesional. |

Hi TTS-For how long do you predict Terry Wogan is back for.
Will he see out the remainder of 2007.Indeed will he still be doing his stuff in 2008.
When is likely to call it a day.
Hopefully succession planning is a key feature of Lesley Douglas' HR plan. |

He played a song that I've had going round my head ever since Mark, 'Come To Me' by Koop!
By the way I've just had a message from Steve Taschini on the Oxford message board to say that as from Monday Jan 8th Allinson's Albums will be on Listen Again. Good news as I'm not always around to hear it live.

Hello Helen-Re your post about a listen again feature to be established for Richard's Saturday afternoon show on Radio Oxford this is indeed good/fantastic news.
Like you I cannot always tune in live to listen on the day as I have a rather pressing engagement every other week at Stamford Bridge supporting the mighty Chelsea FC. I am only able to catch the first hour of Richard's on match days. I can now rest easy that in future on football match days I will be able to catch the second hour of Richard's show on my return home.
Now with regard to your more recent message posted about all is well now that Terry has returned to hosting the breakfast show can I just say.................................
Best

Hi Mark O-I simply don't see Chris Evans taking over from Terry Wogan on the breakfast show when Terry decides to give it all up. I also don't think Terry will go on much longer either.
I have a feeling the replacement for Terry could be either Chris Tarrant or Jonathan Ross. However my first choice/ preference would be for Richard Allinson to be given this prestigious show. He would be just perfect imho. |

I dont think there is any way that 'management' would risk putting JR on the breakfast show. He might start with good intentions, but give him a week and god knows what he'd be coming out with
Apart from anything else <if his Saturday show is anything to go by> he would spend most of his time chomping on a brekkie bacon buttie and telling the listeners to 'Talk amongst yourselves' _________________ Eternal nothingness is fine if you happen to be dressed for it. |
